Situation:

Chilean authorities and specialists keep monitoring the Hudson volcano since it has intensified its activity in the latest hours with steam and ash spewing into the air. Deputy Mining Minister Pablo Wagner confirmed that steam and ash are spewing from three fissures, which is located 1,960 meters high in the Aysen region, almost 2,000 kilometers from the capital. Clouds of steam and smoke have risen up to 5km into the air, confirmed Wagner. So far, ash and steam fissures are reported; and 900 imperceptible earthquakes have hit near the volcano area. The latest eruption of the Hudson volcano took place in 1991 and extended for several months.

A spectacular fire show started last night when Nyamulagira volcano (also known as Nyamuragira) began an eruption that happens about every two years. The eruption could be seen clearly from the Virunga park headquarters – probably the best view you could ask for. It appears that the eruption is not happening on the volcano itself, but on the side and lower to the ground. We’ll fill you in on details once we have them. This is NOT the volcano that tourists hike to see the lava lake, but a far more active volcano just to the north. Most of the lava flows north into an area where no one lives, so it shouldn’t bring harm to people or wildlife as the flow is moving slowly. Eruptions like this one can go on for days, weeks, or even months, so we’ll update you on the status.

Volcano information

Africa’s most active volcano, Nyamuragira is a massive high-potassium basaltic shield volcano that rises about 25 km north of Lake Kivu, NW of Nyiragongo volcano. Nyamuragira, also known as Nyamulagira, has a volume of 500 cu km, and extensive lava flows from the volcano blanket 1500 sq km of the western branch of the East African Rift. The broad low-angle shield volcano contrasts dramatically with its steep-sided neighbor Nyiragongo. The 3058-m-high summit of Nyamuragira is truncated by a small 2 x 2.3 km caldera that has walls up to about 100 m high. Historical eruptions have occurred within the summit caldera, frequently modifying the morphology of the caldera floor, as well as from the numerous fissures and cinder cones on the volcano’s flanks. A lava lake in the summit crater, active since at least 1921, drained in 1938, at the time of a major flank eruption. Situation: There is a pause of the eruption at El Hierro. The activity from the submarine vents ca. 1 km south of El Hierro has decreased significantly, or even stopped completely today, scientists in La Restinga and the Guardia Civil reported.
Nevertheless, volcanic tremor remains high and there have been 10 small earthquakes NW of Frontera in the second half of the past night. Due to the risk of toxic gasses (CO2 in particular), the Guardia Civil has forbidden access to the beaches of Puerto Naos and Tacorón. The decision was triggered after that a technician of IGN was mildly intoxicated while taking samples in the area on Tuesday.

Situation: Civil Protection authorities in the Canary Islands today took the decision to close off access to two coves on the south side of the island of El Hierro close to the eruption site, after detecting an accumulation of gases that could prove to be toxic to the population. The measure was taken after a technician working for the National Geographic Institutel (IGN) required medical attention yesterday after becoming unwell whilst measuring carbon monoxide levels in the area, despite the fact that the team had not found abnormal levels of the gas. The head of Safety and Emergency Services for the Canary Islands, Juan Santana, explained that the technician concerned is now fine and that initial medical reports suggest that he could have had an adverse reaction after inhaling copper sulphate fumes coming from the bubbles of gas and ash that are periodically being expelled by the underwater volcano a mile out to sea. In view of this risk, the authorities have blocked access to Tacorón and Puerto Naos beaches, because the morphology of these coves make them more prone to accumulating gases from the eruption in certain circumstances. Santana made it cleat that there was no similar risk in La Restinga, since no potentially toxic gases have been recorded there, and that the public would continue to have access to the beaches between 8am and 6pm.

Situation:

An earthquake measuring 3.1 points on the Richter scale hit the Katla area in Mýrdalsjökull glacier in south Iceland, underneath which the volcano lies, shortly before 3 am last night. The earthquake’s epicenter was 7.5 kilometers north-northeast of Hábunga. There were no aftershocks and the area has been quiet since, visir.is reports. Unlike the tremors which occurred at a more southerly point in the Katla caldera on Tuesday morning, there were no reports that local residents had felt last night’s quake. Even though it was of a similar magnitude, its epicenter was further away from Vík.

A brand new Canary island is emerging from the sea as an underwater volcano bubbles to the surface.

Magma off the Canary Island of El Hierro has been spewing 20 metres high as the sea boils with a smell of sulphur.

As it grows and gets closer to the surface, more and more debris such as stones start to shoot out of the volcano which, until now, has only shown its explosive power below the surface.

It is now just 70 metres from the surface and islanders are already trying to come up with a name for the new island. It is quite close to El Hierro and if it continues to erupt it could eventually meet up with the mainland.

EXPLOSIVE FACTS ABOUT UNDERWATER VOLCANOES


You may be surprised to learn that 75 per cent of all the lava that erupts every year comes from undersea volcanoes.

The surrounding water immediately cools it and a crust forms known as ‘pillow lava’.

There are over 5,000 known submarine volcanoes, but some are extremely difficult to find, even with today’s technology.

This is because geologists find them by listening for the tell-tale boiling water using hydrophones, but at extreme depths the pressure is too high for water to boil.

The Canary Islands are all volcanic in origin, but are not unique in this respect – the Hawaiian islands are also volcanoes that built up over time and breached the surface.

In hundreds of thousands of years it’ll get a new island called Lo’ihi, which is slowly forming off the south-east coast.

Right now it’s around 3,000 feet beneath the surface, but it’s already been causing trouble, producing frequent earthquakes.



Witnesses said that explosive plumes and jets could be seen on the ocean surface from the underwater volcano which began erupting last month. Some of the material is being ejected as high as 60ft into the air.
The regional government of the Spanish Canary Island issued a 'yellow' volcanic eruption alert - the second on a four-level scale. La Restinga's 600 residents were evacuated last week after the volcanic activity began.

Now new evacuations have been called for people living along the southern end of the island. Authorities have also shut down access to La Restinga.
Ships have been ordered away from waters around the port and aircraft have been banned from flying over the island's southern tip. The regional government of the Canary Islands says scientists have detected airborne volcanic fragments called pyroclasts rising from the sea off La Restinga.
The government said it awaited scientific reports on the danger posed by pyroclasts, but a research vessel that was collecting samples there has been ordered to stop.

Fears of an eruption have been going since the end of July, when El Hierro experienced the first of what has become more than 10,000 tremors - collectively known as an earthquake 'swarm'.
Residents were evacuated from some areas at the end of September when volcanic activity increased to more than 150 tremors in 24 hours. The army was put on standby for a mass evacuation.
Volcano expert Juan Carlos Carrecedo said at the time: 'There is a ball of magma rising to the surface producing a series of ruptures which generate seismic activity.
'We don't know if that ball of magma will break through the crust and cause an eruption.'
But he warned an eruption was possible 'in days, weeks or months'. The last eruption on El Hierro was in 1793 and lasted for a month while the last one in the Canary Islands as a whole took place on the island of La Palma in 1971.

Situation:An underwater volcano near El Hierro in the Canary Islands has begun erupting near the shore, reports Reuters. The eruptions may be spectacular, but officials have also noticed that the volcano is spewing toxic gases into the air around the island. After a worker studying the volcano became ill, several of the island's beaches were closed. In the video, a local explains that the volcano is also making the island's cats act strangely and eat dead fish. The volcano, which is just over 200 feet from the surface, began erupting a week ago. The Daily Mail reports the eruption began with a 4.3-magnitude earthquake. According to the International Business Times, the volcano is shooting magma 65 feet into the air. The eruption is the first in the Canaries since 1971 and locals are already speculating that it may create a new island. Despite the beach closures and dead fish near the island, the island's human population is safe. The Telegraph reports that Spanish authorities "insist there is no major risk for the population."

Mexico's largest active volcano has spewed ash and smoke into the air on Sunday, and local civil protection authorities warned people not to go close as burning ash could fall for hours. The Popocatepetl volcano, 60 kilometres (km) southeast of Mexico City, were clearly visible from the capital and nearby cities of Puebla, Morelos and Mexico State. Access to the volcano has been restricted to a radius of 12 km around the crater following a powerful explosion, which was reported at 12:05 p.m. local time (1805 GMT). The explosion caused the earth to shake and sent smoke and ash over 7 km high into the air, and has alarmed some 20 million people living nearby. However, officials said that no casualties or damages had been reported so far. The Popocatepetl volcano is 5,452 meters high and located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The volcano erupted and ejected lava in December 2000, during which some 30,000 people were evacuated. Its activity started increasing recently and is being monitored.

Titled "Shallow seismicity, triggered seismicity, and ambient noise tomography at the long-dormant Uturuncu Volcano, Bolivia", it reports the findings from a seismic survey of the volcano between April 2009 and April 2010. Uturuncu is in a remote part of the Bolivian Andes, and hasn't erupted for the last 271,000 years. However, InSAR (satellite) measurements have shown it to be inflating by 1-1.5 cm/year, which is quite fast. Modelling this deformation shows it is most likely in response to some increase in volume 15-17 km bellow sea level (21-23 km below the summit). There is a zone of material at this depth where the velocity of seismic waves is found to be low compared to solid rock, and this implies it is partially molten (at least 14-27% melt, likely in some sort of crystal mush). This suggests that the inflation is due to the injection of fresh magma.

This recent study placed a temporary network of seismometers around Uturuncu in order to map out the locations of any earthquakes that might be there. They then did three things with it: attempted to determine the cause of the seismicity; used the low-level seismic noise to calculate some the structures found beneath the volcano; and looked at the effect of the 27 February magnitude 8.8 Maule earthquake. With respect to the Maule earthquake, the team recorded the seismic waves as they arrived. They found that these waves triggered a swarm of small earthquakes. This has been observed before, and doesn't tell us much about the volcano itself, so I shall leave the discussion at that and move on to the cause of the earthquakes. They recorded on average three earthquakes a day, although several times a month there would be a swarm of 5-60 within a few hours. The largest was a magnitude 3.7. The earthquakes clustered around the summit, at depths of around sea-level (The summit of Uturuncu is 6,008 m above sea level).
