The volcano has been sputtering earlier in the week with abundant steam/ash plumes and some strombolian explosions (top left) in the southeast pit crater. Situation: The magnificent scenes at Europe's largest volcano took place in the middle of the night, Etna briefly erupting between 2am and 6am local time. Despite the brevity of the eruption, local officials were still forced to close the airport in the nearby town of Catania, with ash covering the runways. Etna, which is almost 11,000ft high, sits 18 miles from Catania on Sicily's east coast. As experts study the volcano, which last erupted in January, organisers of the Giro d'Italia cycle race are considering the possibility that Sunday's ninth stage between Messina and Etna may be disrupted.

Situation: The eruption of the Etna volcano in southern Italy early Thursday is connected to the earthquakes that rocked the Spanish region of Murcia, killing 12 people and injuring more than 170 others, a seismology expert said Thursday. "We are currently witnessing an intense seismic activity in the entire Mediterranean area from Spain all the way to Malta which has a certain impact on regional volcanoes," said Domenico Patane, director of the Sicily office of Italy s National Geophysics Institute. Patane said volcanoes are like windows from where underground magma surfaces and it's normal that they respond to earthquakes occurring in a geographic proximity. "The Spanish eastern coast hit by the quake, after all, lies close to Italy, in the Mediterranean. Both Spain and Sicily are on the same earth plate," he said. The earthquakes in Spain on Wednesday, which could be felt in Madrid, reportedly had their epicenter near the towns of Lorca and Totana in the Murcia region. The initial tremor of 4.4 magnitude was followed by a quake of about 5.2 magnitude. Around 2 a.m. Thursday people in Sicily felt the earth slightly tremble and heard the sound of an explosion coming from Etna's pit crater. The eruption sent flying massive quantities of lava and volcanic ash, which spilled on the main town of Catania and other nearby villages but luckily caused no serious damage. The central airport was forced to close after it was submerged by the ash. Patane said there were no severe risks for local inhabitants but just for buildings and infrastructures that could be damaged by the ash and condensed lava. "It's normal to have frequent small-scale quakes and minor volcano eruptions in the Mediterranean," he said, "We're used to seismic activity here in Sicily and recently several minor shocks have been felt also across the whole of Italy." Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe, with a 45-kilometer-diameter crater.

At least 11 volcanic quakes were recorded around Taal Volcano in Batangas and Mayon Volcano in Albay in the last 24 hours, state volcanologists said Friday. But the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the alert level at Taal and Mayon remain the same at "2" and "1," respectively. "Taal Volcano's seismic network recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours," Phivolcs said in its Friday update for Taal. It said the alert level remains at "2," meaning magma has been intruding towards the surface, as manifested by the continuing high emission rate of carbon dioxide being released in the Main Crater Lake and sustained seismic activity. Phivolcs reminded the public the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro are strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate. "Breathing air with high concentration of toxic gases can be lethal to humans, animals and even cause damage to vegetation, it said. Also, it said the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that it recorded 144 volcanic earthquakes in Bulusan Volcano yesterday, a major increase compared to the four earthquakes recorded between Sunday and Monday. Phivolcs said their volcanologists observed "weak to moderate steaming activity" at the active vents of the volcano. "Bulusan Volcano is generally known for its sudden steam- driven or phreatic explosions. Similar events are most likely to occur in view of the volcano’s reactivation last 13 May 2011 especially with the current increase in the volcano’s seismicity," the agency said. Alert Level 1 remained hoisted over the volcano, meaning a sudden steam and ash explosion may occur. Phivolcs said entry to the 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited and advised aviation authorities that the volcano's summit is a no-fly zone. The agency also warned residents living near valleys and river/stream channels against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall.

Since May 9, Ineter has recorded 59 seismic shocks in the area, and Telica had ejected a large amount of sand on nearby cities since Friday. Sixty nearby villages were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The volcano is located in Leon province, some 130 kilometres north-west of Managua. It last erupted in 1948.

KUMAMOTO — The Meteorological Agency on Monday raised the volcanic alert level for Mount Aso from 1 to 2, prompting local authorities in Kumamoto Prefecture to ban entry to areas within 1 km of the crater of Mount Naka, one of five peaks in the active volcano's central cone group.
The alert includes a warning for rocks ejected from Mount Naka in the off-limits areas.
The move came after the mountain belched a small amount of volcanic ash Friday and experienced a small eruption Sunday.
On Monday, a small eruption and a 500-meter-high column of volcanic smoke were observed at around 10 a.m.

Situation:

Nicaraguan authorities have evacuated hundreds of people from the foothills of a volcano because of heightened seismic activity. The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies says 600 workers have been moved from a factory near the Telica volcano in western Nicaragua. Women and children who live nearby have also been evacuated. Institute official Angelica Munoz said Thursday that tremors of up to 3.3-magnitude have shaken the 3,480-foot (1,061- meter) volcano. It has been spewing gas, ash, vapor and water since April.

Executive secretary of Agriculture Emergency and Disaster Haroldo Lebed, announced the state of emergency after several fruit producers and sheep farmers warned of serious damages. "The phenomenon is tremendous in terms of the economic impact it causes – it is impossible to gauge the damage,” he was quoted as saying. Hekla in southern Iceland have shown “unusual activity” in recent days. The Public Safety Commission has been alerted. According to RÚV Public Radio there is no reason for action as of now. The movements have been recorded in five very precise meters that have been placed around Mt. Hekla in recent years. Professor Páll Einarsson says that these movements are seen in all five meters and even though the evidence is not conclusive they are thought to show magma movement under the volcano. It has now been eleven years since Mt. Hekla, Iceland’s most famous volcano, erupted. In the years since then the mountain is said to have slowly expanded because of magma buildup. The last eruption in Hekla came on February 26 2000 and then earthquakes started an hour and a half before the outbreak of the magma. As of now there is no cause for any activity on behalf of the Public safety commission.
