    ภูขาไฟ Karangetang ตรงเกาะสุลาเวสีระเบิดวันศุกร์ ด้วยการเตือนสูงสุดระดับแดง

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Indonesia Siau Island Mount Karangetang Volcano

    Situation:

Indonesia issued a red alert Friday after Mount Karangetang on the island of Sulawesi erupted, sending lava and searing gas clouds down its slopes, a volcanologist said. "We raised the volcano's status to the highest red alert level today at 5:45 pm (1045GMT) and ordered an evacuation in three villages on the slopes," government volcanologist Surono said. He said that the 1,784-meter (5,850-foot) mountain on the sparsely-populated island off North Sulawesi oozed lava, heat clouds and debris reaching as far as 3,800 meters away down its slopes. "The eruption is still going on and its current activity remains high," he said. "The main threat is heat clouds that will be fatal for people living in villages on the slope." The volcano killed four people during an eruption in August 2010. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. The archipelago nation is home to 129 active volcanoes, including 21 on Java.

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Indonesia Siau Island Mount Karangetang Volcano Number of Evacuated: 600 person(s)

    Situation:

Indonesia said it had evacuated hundreds of people living near Mount Karangetang off northern Sulawesi island as authorities issued a red alert on Saturday following its eruption. Nearly 600 people live in three villages four kilometres (2.4 miles) from the volcano's western peak, from which lava continues to spew as it disgorges heat clouds, government volcanologist Kristianto told AFP. "The process to evacuate 582 villagers has completed. All are now at safety shelters and nobody was injured," he said from the volcano's monitoring post. "The volcano is still in the phase of eruption. We detected lava flow which reached as far as 1,800 metres (5,905 feet)," he added. The 1,784-metre Karangetan, which forms the northern part of the remote Siau Island in North Sulawesi, killed four people during an eruption in August 2010. The Indonesian archipelago has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the "Ring of Fire" between the Pacific and Indian oceans. The country's most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, has killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions which started in late October.

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Indonesia Siau Island Mount Karangetang Volcano Number of Evacuated: 1200 person(s)

    Situation:
Up to 1,200 people have fled an active volcano in northern Indonesia, disaster officials said Monday. The evacuations were made from two villages near Mount Karangetang, on Siau Island, the country's National Disaster Management Agency said. Local and national officials estimated the number of evacuees at between 800 - 1,200 people, with damage reported to a home, a church and some bridges.

The nearly 6,000-foot (1,827-meter) volcano is one of Indonesia's most active. An eruption in August killed four people. Late last week, Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Disaster Management Agency raised the volcano's alert status to its highest level, after noting increased activity on March 11. Ash clouds from Mount Karangetang reached 7,500 feet (2,300 meters) over the weekend, with lava reported flowing down the mountainside.

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Japan Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyüshü Minamidake Crater, Sakurajima Volcano

Situation: Japan’s Meteorological Agency, Tokyo Volcanic Ash Advisory Center issued an ash warning for Sakurajima Volcano which is considered ‘very dangerous’. Sakurajima (also spelled Sakurashima or Sakura-jima in Japanese) volcano in southern Kyushu is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and one of the few that are at present in constant (persistant) activity. Its ongoing typical activity range from strong strombolian to large ash explosions every 4-24 hours.

The volcano is located across Kagoshima Bay only 8 km east of the city of Kagoshima with a population of half a million. Sakurajima’s eruptive history has been recorded since the 8th century. It has frequently deposited ash on Kagoshima, and due to its explosive potential, considered a very dangerous volcano and closely monitored. The largest historical eruptions of Sakurajima took place during 1471-76 and in 1914.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) head Renato Solidum Jr. said carbon dioxide levels in March were more than four times higher that those recorded last year. “Masyadong mataas ang carbon dioxide na lumalabas sa kanyang crater. Last year 1,000 tons per day, tumaas nitong taong ito. Since January, 2,000 tons per day at sa March 4,600 tons per day," Solidum said. He said this was due to magma underground releasing gas. “Ang aming reminder huwag pumasok ang mga tao, turista o sinuman sa crater ng volcano kasi delikado (We are reminding the public, especially tourists, not to get close to the crater," he said. Solidum said carbon dioxide is dangerous to humans and may cause dizziness and suffocation. “Delikado ang carbon dioxide sa tao. Pag sobra ang nalanghap namamatay," he said. On Thursday, Phivolcs also noted increased activity at Taal Volcano, including more volcanic quakes and occasional intensification of steaming activities. However, it said the alert level at Taal will remain at "1" for the moment.

"The number of volcanic earthquakes recorded daily remained above the background level of up to 14 events per day. Felt earthquakes of varying intensities from Intensity I to III and rumbling sounds occasionally occur. Hypocenters of plotted volcanic earthquakes were shallow, ranging from a depth of 1.0 to 5.0 kms," Phivolcs said in its update. Also, it said there was occasional intensification of steaming activities observed at the northern portion of the Main Crater Lake and at the upper Daang Kastila. Increased steaming and bubbling activities at the 1998 reactivated thermal vent were also noticed from time to time, it said. Phivolcs added gas measurements conducted at Taal Main Crater Lake last January and March showed carbon dioxide emission flux increased from 2,250 tons per day to 4,670 t/d. "The remarkable increase in (carbon dioxide) concentration indicates anomalous gas release from the magma at depth," it said. Phivolcs added precise leveling measurements conducted in February 2011 around the flanks of Volcano Island showed that the volcano edifice is slightly inflated as compared with the December 2010 survey. Since June 2010, the volcano exhibited a general inflationary trend, it added.

"In view of the above observations, Phivolcs reiterates Alert Level 1 and its recommendation over Taal Volcano. At present, no imminent eruption is indicated. However, the public is advised to strictly observe some safety precautions," it said. Phivolcs reminded the public that the Main Crater should remain strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate. "Breathing air with high concentration [of toxic gases] can be lethal to humans, animals and even cause damage to vegetation," it said. It added the northern portion of the Main Crater rim in the vicinity of Daang Kastila trail, may also be dangerous when increase steam emission is reactivated along existing fissures. The public was also reminded that entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended. Last Wednesday, Phivolcs said at least four volcanic quakes were recorded in the last 24 hours.

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: New Zealand North Island Mount Ruapehu Volcano

Situation: Mount Ruapehu's Crater Lake is heating up, but there are no signs an eruption is imminent. GNS Science volcanologists said today high water temperatures, currently about 38degC-39degC, were being experienced in the lake. GeoNet duty volcanologist Agnes Mazot said changes had also recently occurred in volcanic gas output, seismic activity and Crater Lake water chemistry. "These changes show that Ruapehu is experiencing signs of elevated unrest above known background levels. "Hence the aviation colour code is being raised to yellow," she said. The four-tiered volcano alert level uses the terms normal, advisory, watch, and warning, with yellow being he advisory category. The lake reached 41degC on March 1. "Since the lake was re-established in 2002, the highest recorded temperature was 42.5degC in May 2003, and there have been eight heating cycles. "The temperature of Crater Lake is a measure of amount of volcanic heat coming from Ruapehu." The volcanic alert level remains at level one, which means there are signs of volcanic unrest. During the current period of high lake temperatures there had also been changes in lake chemistry, increases in carbon dioxide gas emissions and minor increases in seismic activity beneath the volcano. "These observations, particularly the seismic activity, have not been observed during previous periods of high lake temperature," said Ms Mazot. They indicated that Ruapehu was experiencing a period of unrest above that which was typical. While there were currently no indications an eruption was imminent, Ruapehu remained an active volcano and future eruptions may occur with little or no warning, she said.

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: New Zealand North Island Mount Ruapehu Volcano

    Situation:
Temperatures at Mt Ruapehu are staying hotter for longer than the norm, with the volcano's crater lake sustaining a prolonged hot phase for only the second time since it formed. GNS Science vulcanologists yesterday issued an aviation alert for the mountain, as the high water temperatures combined with other signs of volcanic unrest in the area. Changes in volcanic gas output, seismic activity and crater lake water chemistry were all recently recorded. GNS Science volcano surveillance co-ordinator Brad Scott said the high temperatures at the lake - around 38 to 39C - were unusual because they were staying high for a prolonged period. "Normally the lake only sustains that high temperature for a few weeks," Scott said. "But the lake temperature rose rapidly in February, peaking at 41 degrees on March 1 and is yet to really come down." Scott said the crater lake regularly went through heating cycles, where magma heated the lake then cooled off again. The current cycle, the eighth since the lake was re-established in 2002 after the 1995-1996 eruptions, began in October last year. A cycle could last up to 14 months. The lake had only sustained such a high temperature once before, in early 2008, following the September 2007 eruption, Scott said. However, despite the changes in volcanic activity, there were no indications an eruption was imminent. The volcanic alert level remained at level one, which meant there were signs of volcanic unrest. Scott said the changes at Ruapehu were not linked to other seismic activity. "Each of the volcanoes acts as an individual. They are quite independent," he said. Scientists were constantly monitoring the seismic activity at Ruapehu, where there were a number of small earthquakes each year. However, there was not a "one-on-one" relationship between earthquakes and eruptions, Scott said. GNS Science vulcanologists would continue to monitor Ruapehu. It remains an active volcano and future eruptions may occur with little or no warning.

    ภูเขาไฟ Taal ในฟิลิปปินส์ มีสัญญาณจะปะทุ ใน 24 ชั่วโมงข้างหน้า

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: Philippines Province of Batangas (Luzon) Taal Volcano

Situation: Restive Taal Volcano in Batangas showed signs of heightened activity anew in the last 24 hours, as state seismologists recorded at least nine volcanic quakes there during that period. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology also recorded weak steaming activity at the thermal area in the Main Crater Lake. "Phivolcs reiterates Alert Level 1 and its recommendation over Taal Volcano. At present, no imminent eruption is indicated. However, the public is advised to strictly observe some safety precautions. Phivolcs reminds the general public that the Main Crater should remain strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate," it said in its Friday bulletin. Also, it noted water temperature in the area slightly increased from 30 degrees Celsius to 30.5 degrees, although the water has become slightly less acidic.

    ภูเขาไฟ Taal ในฟิลิปปินส์ มีการไหว 9 ครั้งใน 24 ชั่วโมง

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: Philippines Province of Batangas (Luzon) Taal Volcano

Situation: The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) today warned the public against going near Taal Volcano as it records an increase in the volcano’s activity. The Phivolcs said that Taal Volcano's seismic network recorded nine volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours. It said that water temperature slightly increased from 30.0°C to 30.5°C and the pH value also slightly increased to 2.84 compared to the last reading of 2.82 last March 29. The Phivolcs said gas measurement conducted on the crater last January, February and March yielded C02 emission values of 2,250 tons per day, 1,875 tons per day and 4,670 tons per day, respectively. "The remarkable increase in C02 concentration indicates anomalous gas release from the magma at depth," the agency said. It added that the volcano's edifice is slightly inflated based on a ground deformation survey conducted around the volcano island last February. Despite the volcano's increased activity, the Phivolcs said that there was still no reason to increase the alert from Level 1. It added that there was no threat of imminent eruption from the volcano. "However, the public is advised to strictly observe some safety precautions," it said. The Phivolcs reminded the public that the volcano's main crater is "strictly off-limits" as sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate. It said that inhaling CO2 gas can cause negative effects such as headache, dizziness, muscular weakness and fainting. It added that breathing air with high concentration can be lethal to human, animals and even cause damage to vegetation. The Phivolcs also warned the public against venturing near the Daang Kastila trail.

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: Philippines Province of Batangas (Luzon) Taal Volcano

Situation: Citing at least four disturbing recent trends indicating an eruption, state volcanologists on Saturday raised the alert level at Taal Volcano in Batangas to “2." The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said an eruption is possible as there are signs of magma rising to the surface. “In view of the above observations at Taal Volcano and the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface, as manifested by (carbon dioxide) being released in Main Crater Lake and the increase in seismic activity, Taal Volcano’s status is now raised to Alert Level 2. With this alert status, the present activities could eventually lead to an eruption," it said in its website. With the raising of the alert level, Phivolcs advised the public that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro are strictly “off limits." Mt. Tabaro was the site of an eruption in 1965, it noted. Phivolcs pointed out sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate in those areas. In raising the alert level, Phivolcs noted “significant changes" as indicated by the following observations:

    1. Seismic activity at Taal Volcano continued to worsen, as the number of volcanic earthquakes detected gradually rose and the depths of the plotted quakes are becoming shallow (1 to 4 km). There is also an increase in the number of perceptible quakes. During the past 24 hours, two quakes were felt at the Volcano Island with Intensities ranging from II to III and one of them was accompanied by rumbling sounds. At least 21 volcanic quakes were detected by the seismic network for the past 24 hours.
    2. Gas measurements conducted at Taal Main Crater Lake yielded carbon dioxide emission flux of 1,875 tons per day (t/d) in February 2011 and 4,670 t/d during the last week of March 2011. The remarkable increase in carbon dioxide concentration indicates its release from the magma at depth.

    3. Ground deformation survey (precise leveling) conducted around the Volcano Island this week showed that volcano edifice is still inflated as compared with February 2011 survey.

    4. Steaming activities at the northern and northeast sides of the Main Crater occasionally intensified. Sometimes, intensification of steaming activity is accompanied by audible hissing sounds. Phivolcs also reiterated its warning that breathing air with high concentration of carbon dioxide can be lethal to humans and animals, and can damage vegetation. It likewise reiterated the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended.

    Disaster tourism in Indonesia

[IMG]Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Merapi's last eruption was the biggest in a century

One of the world’s most dangerous volcanos, the Indonesian Merapi, attracted international attention last November with its biggest eruption in one hundred years. Now tourists are coming to see the devastated areas.

Merapi, which means "Fire Mountain" in Indonesian, has always been a popular tourist site, with people going there to enjoy the beautiful view, idyllic villages or the relatively cool temperatures. But the eruption has left its mark.

As around 400,000 people who had to spend weeks in emergency shelters return home, many find nothing but ash or mud where their villages once stood.

With a lack of social security systems in the country, the victims of Merapi have to struggle to get their normal lives back.

[IMG]Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Tourists used to come to Merapi to enjoy the idyllic villages
Suparlan from WALHI Jogjakarta, an environmental NGO that is helping the locals in Merapi to build up their lives again, says that from the promised 800 shelters, only 400 have been built in the last five months. He adds that bad sanitation is also an issue that the locals have to deal with. Up to 100 people have to share public toilets that are supposed to be used by around 15 people each.

High demand to see the disaster area

Now local tour and travel agencies are trying to attract tourists to visit these disaster sites with slogans such as "Lava Tour", "Merapi Eruption Special" or "Full day volcano tour".

Dwi is a nurse from Jakarta and has just spent a few days there, visiting one of the destroyed villages. She says all the houses are totally ruined. "Only the bottom parts are visible, like parts of the floor," she explains, "I also saw what used to be a small mosque, now you can only see the ridges."

[IMG]Bildunterschrift: Many locals who come back home find nothing but ruined villages covered in ash

She also illustrates how all the trees are burnt. "It’s different than if a fire had burnt the trees, these trees are dry to the core," she says further. "They said the hot cloud caused it."

Dwi says that seeing the destruction reminds her of how small human beings are and that there is a higher power above.

The demand to visit disaster areas is high, says Edwin Ismedi Himna from the association of the Indonesia Tour and Travel agency Jogjakarta. Although there are no official numbers, Himna mentions thousands of local and international tourists have been visiting the post-eruption Merapi.

    Tourists boosting the local economy

[IMG]Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Tourists have a good impact on the inhabitants
Himna says the locals are grateful for tourists because they "feel the economic impact coming from the tourists." Himna tells Deutsche Welle that people in the villages around Merapi sell drinks, snacks and T-shirts to earn extra money. Some of them also rent their motorcycles because the traffic is bad during the weekend due to many people coming, Himna adds.

"The tourists have a good impact on the locals," Himna says further. "They are thankful for every single tourist."

Himna adds that special programs have been developed to help the tourists make donations. One such program is called the "Go Green Campaign", which encourages visitors to buy seeds or small trees from locals and plant them in the villages.

    Cold lava can cause landslides

While there is profit in this kind of tourism, some observers are wary. For Suparlan from the NGO WALHI, it is important that the locals are not overly focused on getting help from the tourists by "selling" their devastated villages. He does not think that this trend would last long, and they certainly wouldn’t make enough money to rebuild their villages.

[IMG]Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Volcanic ash can cause eye and lung irritation
Subandrio from the Volcano Investigation and Technology Development Institution says that although at the moment there is no immediate threat that the volcano will erupt again, there is always the danger of cold lava being washed away by rain, which can cause landslides. Apart from that, volcanic ash often contains sharp elements, which can cause eye irritation, as well as lung problems.

Thus Subandrio is worried that tourists who are not familiar with the areas might run into troubles. He says there are some regulations concerning the safety of the visitors, but he doubts its effectiveness.

For Dwi, the nurse from Jakarta, the trip to Merapi has been an impressive one. She is amazed by the high spirit of the locals who are trying to rebuild their villages. Despite the difficulties, Dwi said, they still look strong and happy.

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: Philippines Province of Batangas (Luzon) Taal Volcano

    Situation:
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Center has started informing residents--especially children, elderly and the disabled--living near Taal volcano to voluntary evacuate. This after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised Taal volcano’s alert level status to 2 after it showed increased seismic activity on Saturday. Local and foreign tourists were advised not trek the volcano or go on boat riding around the lake. “The public is also advice not to venture into the Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro as steam explosion may occur not to mention the presence of toxic gas,” reported Sarita Kare of ABS-CBN Southern Tagalog. Zenaida Palisoc’s family from Manila was contented to just view the volcano from a far. “Papunta sana kami doon sa crater. Magbo-boating kami,” said Palisoc. Patrick Palanca from Makati City meanwhile wondered why they were allowed to go on boat riding around the lake until Saturday afternoon despite the warning. “We were wondering why there weren't any tourists,” he said. Foreign tourist David Ford of the United Kingdom has decided to follow the warning. “I've been told to keep away. We will follow the advice," he said. The estimated 200 to 300 tourists and Taal resorts visitors have either cancelled their bookings or gone home. For her part, Talisay Mayor Zenaida Mendoza said that it is business as usual in the area. “Business as usual. Wala namang nakakatakot dito sa Talisay. Pwede naman silang mag-swimming sa mainland may mga ino-offer ang resorts," Mendoza said.

    Situation:
Philippines has banned tourists near the region of Taal Volcano due to fear of eruption. After scientists warning on Saturday of possible Taal Volcano eruption, tourists from the nearby region have been evacuated. The latest threat came after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level for Taal Volcano to second level. This came after more than 21 earthquakes and sharp rise in the carbon dioxide emissions. Taal Volcano is a popular tourist destination in Philippines. Although due to the possible threat of high level of toxic gases that could be fatal, tourists are banned from the region. Philippines Tourism has also advised tourists to avoid traveling to Taal Volcano. Scientists also warned of more carbon dioxide emission. On Sunday earthquake in Taal Volcano slowed down however Scientists are in no mood to reduce the alert level for the Taal Volcano. Scientists still want to wait for another few days before making any decision regarding the alert level for the Taal Volcano. Meanwhile tourists are urged not to travel Taal Volcano as Level 2 alert means increasing unrest that could potentially lead to eruption. These is a threat of sudden toxic gas accumulation that could be very dangerous.

State geologists on Saturday raised the volcanic alert level for Taal volcano to ‘2' after it showed signs of activity. In a bulletin on the volcano located about 100km south of Manila, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology (Phivolcs) said "significant changes" had been noticed since its alert level 1 on March 31. The institute has a five-step alert level with level 5 indicating an eruption. "Seismic activity at Taal volcano continued to worsen. The number of volcanic earthquakes has gradually risen," it said .
