Eight more quakes hit Saturday, including a magnitude 2.6. Most of the quakes happened about six miles north of the crater. The latest, a magnitude 2.2, happened at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday. A report from the Cascades Volcano Observatory on Friday said the volcano was at a normal level of seismicity. Scientists said that even though Mount St. Helens sits on an area of tectonic weakness, they’re not too alarmed about the recent swarm of earthquakes because this type of activity can be quite common for an active volcano.

    อัพเดท ภูเขาไฟ St.Helens ในอเมริกา ใกล้ปะทุ (จับตาดูแผ่นดินไหวข้างๆ)

    Situation Update No. 1
    On 2011-01-31 at 20:45:16 [UTC]

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: USA State of Washington Mount St. Helens
    volcano area

    Situation:

Experts see little threat from a swarm of small earthquakes that occurred over the weekend at Mount St. Helens. A spokesman at the seismology lab at the University Washington, Bill Steele, says the quakes were caused by faults and not volcanic activity. There were 15 quakes, mostly in the magnitude 1 range, with a couple around magnitude 2.5 recorded by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. They were about two miles deep just northwest of the volcano. Steele says there were no reports the quakes were felt and the swarm dropped off Sunday. While it wasn't alarming, Steele says an earthquake swarm near the volcano is closely watched.

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Japan Prefectures of Kagoshima and Miyazaki Shinmoedake Volcano

    Situation:
A revived Japanese volcano has erupted with its biggest explosion yet, sending a huge plume of gas, rocks and ash into the sky and breaking windows 5 miles (8 kilometers) away. Officials widened the danger zone to keep residents away. The eruption early Tuesday was the biggest since the Shinmoedake volcano burst to life last week. Wide areas were covered with ash and boulders landed on roads miles (kilometers) away. The blast also knocked down trees and broke hundreds of windows in local hotels and offices. The volcano is in the remote Kirishima range on the southern island of Kyushu. Public broadcaster NHK said a woman suffered cuts from shattered glass in Tuesday's blast. No serious injuries have been reported.

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Japan Prefectures of Kagoshima and Miyazaki Shinmoedake Volcano

    Situation:
The Mt. Shinmoe volcano in southern Japan erupted again Tuesday morning, with the country's Meteorological Agency calling it the fourth and most powerful eruption in recent days. About 240 residents were evacuated from the town of Takaharu over the weekend when the volcano resumed its eruptions. Tuesday's eruption was so powerful that it broke more than 150 windows in structures in nearby Kirishima city, local officials said. A 91-year-old woman in the city suffered minor injuries when she was cut by broken glass. The eruptions started last Wednesday and at one point ash spewed up to 9,800 feet (3,000 meters) into the air, officials said. The last Mt. Shinmoe eruption was in July. A large-scale eruption such as the recent ones, however, was last observed about 52 years ago, the meteorological observatory said.

"Taal Volcano's status at Alert Level 1 means that a hazardous eruption is not imminent. However, the public is reminded that the Main Crater should be strictly off-limits due to sudden occurrence of steam explosions and accumulation of toxic gases," it said. Phivolcs said the northern rim of the Volcano’s main crater – in the vicinity of Daang Kastila trail – may also be dangerous when increased steam emission is reactivated along existing fissures. ภูเขาไฟKagoshima and Miyazaki Shinmoedake สะสมลาวาเตรียมปะทุ

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Japan Prefectures of Kagoshima and Miyazaki Shinmoedake Volcano

    Situation:
Last week southern Japan was shaken by the eruption of a volcano which apparently has come back to life. The volcano had the strongest eruption in 52 years last week causing the concern of the authorities who have asked near by residents to leave their homes and head for safer areas.

The eruption did not cause any human fatalities but according to reports it had damaged the crops in the area causing schools to be closed and trains to be suspended.

All flights in the area were grounded and air line activity interrupted in the area because of the large ash and boulders quantities in the area. The eruption was so strong that it shattered house windows wounding a woman. If last week’s eruption of the Shinmoedake volcano was registered as the strongest volcano eruption in 52 years, the follow up today most surely surpassed it. A second eruption of the volcano occurred today in the form of an ash and boulders explosion, knocking down trees and shattering windows on a distance of more than 5 miles away. Gas busted out of the volcano, endangering the surrounding area of the volcano which should have been deserted. But although people living in the near by of the volcano were advised last week to leave their homes and head for safer surroundings, many of them left but only to shortly return to their homes. Today’s eruption is estimated to be five times stronger than the one last week.

The great danger is yet to come as according to experts lava is growing inside the volcano. It is yet unknown whether the lava will be able to spill outside the margins of the crater.

Páll Einarsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland, says the area around Bárdarbunga is showing signs of increased activity, which provides “good reason to worry”. He told the country's national TV broadcaster Rúv a shortage of seismometer measuring devices is making it more difficult to determine the scale and likely outcome of the current shifts. But he said there was “every reason to worry” as the sustained earthquake tremors to the north east of the remote volcano range are the strongest recorded in recent times and there was “no doubt” the lava as rising. The geologist complained that the lack of coverage of measuring devices means he cannot accurately detect the depth and exact location of the increased number of localised earth movements. “This is the most active areas of the country if we look at the whole country together,” he told Rúv News.

“There is no doubt that lava there is slowly growing, and the seismicity of the last few days is a sign of it. “We need better measurements because it is difficult to determine the depth of earthquakes because it is in the middle of the country and much of the area is covered with glaciers.” Respected volcano watcher Jón Frímann, said on his volcano watch blog: “After the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption in the year 2010 it seems that geologists in Iceland take earthquake swarms more seriously then they did before.” He explained the Icelandic Met Office had on Sunday warned of the increased risk of a eruption in north-west side of Vatnajökull glacier due to the high earthquake activity in the area, and added: “It is clear that only time is going to tell us if there is going to be a eruption in this area soon or not.” The last recorded eruption of Bárdarbunga was in 1910, although volcanologists believe its last major eruption occurred in 1477 when it produced a large ash and pumice fall-out. It also produced the largest known lava flow during the past 10,000 years on earth. It is the second largest volcano on Iceland and is directly above the mantle plume of molten rock. By comparison, Bárdarbunga dwarves the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which shutdown most of Europe's airspace last year after its ash cloud drifted across the continent's skies.

WikiPedia: Bárbarbunga the glacier is a large and powerful Stratovolcano. It is also Iceland's largest volcanic system, considered to be close to 200 km long and up to 25 km wide. The volcano is covered in ice hiding her massive glacier-filled crater. Bárbarbunga was a little known volcano in Iceland because of its location far away from settlement and infrequent eruptions. However Icelanders have learned to respect this large and powerful volcano. Bárbarbunga's highest spot is 2009 meters high and is the second highest mountain in the country. The main crater in Bárðarbunga is about 70 square kilometers, up to 10 km wide and about 700 meters deep. The surrounding edges rise up to 1850 meters but the base is on average close to 1100 meters. The crater is completely filled with ice. Many tephra layers originally thought to belong to other volcanoes have in the recent studies proved to be from Bárðarbunga. The Gjálp eruption in 1996 revealed that an interaction may be between Bárðarbunga and Grímsvötn. A strong earthquake in Bárbarbunga, about 5 on the Richter, is believed to have started the eruption in Gjálp. Sustained seismic activity has been in Bárbarbunga for some years without an eruption, which indicates the volcano is still active. Bárbarbunga volcano is specific to the extent that there is frequent volcanic activity outside the glacier to the southwest in the highlands between Vatnajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, also to the northeast toward Dyngjufjöll. The largest eruptions appear to be when magma rushes southwest.

    ภูเขาไฟที่ไอซ์แลนด์ ลาวาเพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆ และคาดว่าน่าจะปะทุแรงกว่าปีที่แล้ว

    Event: Volcano Activity
    Location: Iceland Bárbarbunga Volcano

    Situation:
Iceland’s second largest volcano looks set to blow, bringing far more chaos than last year’s eruption, geologists warned yesterday. Professor Pall Einarsson, of the University of Iceland, said unprecedented tremors gave good reason to worry. He added: “There is no doubt that lava there is slowly growing.” Bardarbunga’s last major eruption, in 1477, shot vast clouds of ash into the air and produced the biggest lava flow of the past 10,000 years. In comparison, the volcano which brought air traffic to a standstill last year, is tiny.

    ภูิเขาไฟในญี่ปุ่นก็เริ่มๆ ปะทุเ้ถ้าถ่านอีกแระ

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Japan Prefectures of Kagoshima and Miyazaki Shinmoedake Volcano

    Situation:
Japan's Meteorological Agency has raised the level of alert against volcanic activity at Mount Shinmoe in the Kirishima mountain range as eruptions that started Wednesday morning continue. The Meteorological Agency says an eruption was observed at Mount Shinmoe on January 19th for the first time in about half a year. A small eruption took place around 7:30 Wednesday morning and again shortly before 3:00 PM. The scale of the eruption steadily increased, with growing volcanic tremors. Starting from around 3:30 PM, smoke billowed from the volcano, rising as high as 1,500 meters, and streaming down the southeastern side of the mountain. Volcanic ash began falling on Miyakonojoh city, Miyazaki prefecture, around 4:00 PM. The Agency is advising people to stay away from areas within a two-kilometer radius of the crater. The Meteorological Agency says there is a possibility volcanic activity will intensify, showering large cinders on areas near the crater. Due to seasonal northwesterly winds, volcanic ash is expected to continue falling on the southeastern side of the mountain late into the night.

    ภูเขาไฟในไอซ์แลนด์ เริ่มๆ จะปะทุแต่คาดไม่ได้แน่นอนว่าจะปะทุเมื่อไหร่

    Event: Volcano Activity
    Location: Iceland Bárbarbunga Volcano

    Situation:
Another volcano could be about to erupt on Iceland, threatening to spew out a blanket of dust that would dwarf last year’s eruption and ground hundreds more passenger flights. Geologists say there is a high risk of the island’s second-largest volcano Bárdarbunga erupting after an increase in the number of earthquakes around it. Pall Einarsson, a professor of geophysics at the University of Iceland, says the increased activity provides “good reason to worry”. The sustained tremors to the north-east of the remote volcano range are the strongest recorded in recent times and there was “no doubt’ the lava was rising. But he added that a low number of detection devices in the area make it difficult to predict exactly what will happen, and when. Last year’s eruption of volcanos near Eyjafjallajokull, in the south of the island, caused chaos around the world as hundreds of planes were grounded by dust and ash. The last recorded eruption of Bárdarbunga was in 1910, although experts believe a huge discharge in 1477 produced the largest lava flow of the past 10 000 years on Earth.

    อัพเดท การปะทุของภูเขาไฟที่ไอซ์แลนด์

    Event: Volcano Activity
    Location: Iceland Bárbarbunga Volcano

    Situation:
The Iceland volcano eruption last year wiped out flights for weeks and caused havoc all over the world. Bárdarbunga, the volcano which caused so much chaos, is reportedly set to explode again. However, the warnings were set off after an inaccurately translated quote from Icelandic scientist Pall Einarsson. After hearing of the volcano scare, Icelandic broadcaster RUV set up an interview with Einarsson about his predictions. He said in the interview that he could hardly believe how much information had been jumbled in its translation. RUV, the Icelandic broadcaster, interviewed Einarsson in his native Icelandic to clear the air about the controversy. When asked about his predictions for the volcanic eruption, Einarsson vehemently denied that he had ever predicted any such thing. He said to RUV during the interview, “It is really strange how this news came into existence. I wasn’t even warning of a likely eruption at Bárdarbunga [in the interview]…The things I emphasized in my interview with RUV’s Bjorn Malmqvist were that the earthquakes at Bárdarbunga and Kistufell last week are not unusual, there are often movements there, and sometimes much bigger than this.” “In the long-term, we can see an increase in earthquake intensity at Bárdarbunga. But it is still a lot less than between 1974 and 1996…And finally that Bárdarbunga is an active volcano and could of course prove dangerous, which is why there is always reason to monitor it closely; which is why we do,” Einarsson clarified.

    New Deep-Sea Volcanoes Discovered

Scientists aboard the Royal Research Ship James Cook have discovered a new set of deep-sea volcanic vents in the chilly waters of the Southern Ocean. The discovery is the fourth made by the research team in three years, which suggests that deep-sea vents may be more common in our oceans than previously thought.

The vents are at a depth of 520 meters in a newly-discovered seafloor crater close to the South Sandwich Islands, a remote group of islands around 500 kilometers south-east of South Georgia.

With a summit that reaches 3,283 meters (10,771 feet), Shiveluch is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. At least 60 large eruptions of Shiveluch have occurred during the past 10,000 years, making it the most vigorous volcano of the Kuril-Kamchatka volcanic arc.

On January 25, 2011, the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra satellite detected a hot avalanche of volcanic debris—a pyroclastic flow—sliding down the south side of the volcano. This image shows the flow’s heat signature as measured in thermal infrared light. The white area at the lava dome is very hot, while the red areas on the edge of the flow are just warmer than the surrounding snow.
The hot trail of material descending to the south forms a large distributed deposit, indicating a recent collapse of the lava dome and formation of a large debris avalanche. According to the Global Volcanism Program, Shiveluch’s current eruptive period began in 1999.

    Emi Koussi Volcano, Chad

    Posted February 14, 2011
    [IMG]

The broad Emi Koussi volcano is a shield volcano located in northern Chad, at the southeastern end of the Tibesti Range. The dark volcanic rocks of the volcano provide a sharp contrast to the underlying tan and light brown sandstone exposed to the west, south, and east (image lower left, lower right, and upper right).

Emi Koussi was formed from relatively low viscosity lavas—flowing more like motor oil than toothpaste—and explosively-erupted ignimbrites that produce a characteristic low and broad structure covering a wide area (approximately 60 by 80 kilometers).

This astronaut photograph highlights the entire volcanic structure. At 3,415 meters above sea level, Emi Koussi is the highest summit of Africa’s Sahara region. The summit includes three calderas formed by powerful eruptions. Two older and overlapping calderas form a depression approximately 12 kilometers by 15 kilometers in area bounded by a distinct rim (image center). The youngest and smallest caldera, Era Kohor, formed as a result of eruptive activity within the past 2 million years.

Young volcanic features, including lava flows and scoria cones are also thought to be less than 2 million years old. There are no historical records of eruptions at Emi Koussi, but there is an active thermal area on the southern flank of the volcano.

Astronaut photograph ISS026-E-17074 was acquired on January 11, 2011, with a Nikon D2Xs digital camera using a 70 mm lens, and is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations experiment and Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by the Expedition 26 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast. Lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Caption by William L. Stefanov, NASA-JSC.

In its Thursday report, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reiterated Taal's main crater remains off limits to the public. "Alert Level 1 is still enforced over Taal Volcano. This means that a hazardous eruption is not imminent. However, the public is reminded that the main crater should be strictly off-limits due to sudden occurrence of steam explosions and accumulation of toxic gases," Phivolcs said on its website. It added that the northern portion of the main crater rim, in the vicinity of Daang Kastila trail, may also be dangerous when increased steam emission is reactivated along existing fissures. Phivolcs also reminded the public that the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended.

Shinmoedake began erupting in late January, in its biggest activity in some 300 years. The volcanic activity has disrupted airline flights and blanketed nearby vegetable farms with ash, but there have been no reports of serious injury or deaths. The Japan Meteorological Agency expected rainfall of more than 4 mm (0.16 inch) per hour to last until Thursday night, an amount that the local government said could cause mudslides. The official, in the city of Miyakonojo, said 63 people had moved to evacuation centres by midday. The town of Takaharu, located at the foot of 1,421 metre (4,662 ft) mountain on the southern island of Kyushu, also advised about 250 residents and a business to prepare for evacuation in case it was necessary.
