ภูเขาไฟขนาดยักษ์อยู่ใต้มหาสมุทรอินเดีย ระหว่างการสำรวจเพื่อหาสาเหตุของสึนามิ นักวิทยาศาสตร์อังกฤษชี้ภูเขาไฟระเบิดครั้งใหญ่ในจีนเกือบทำลายชีวิตบนโลกสูญสิ้นเมื่อ 260 ล้านปีก่อน

ทีมนักวิทยาศาสตร์นานาชาติได้ค้นพบภูเขาไฟ อยู่ห่างไปทางตะวันตกของเกาะสุมาตราประมาณ 330 กิโลเมตร ขณะทำการสำรวจใต้ท้องมหาสมุทรอินเดีย เมื่อช่วงต้นเดือนและภูเขาไฟอยู่ต่ำจากผิวน้ำ 1,380 เมตร

Arenal boasts a perfect stratovolcano cone and is the most active volcano in Costa Rica. It is also considered one of the ten most active in the world. Mini eruptions occur approximately every 10 to 15 minutes daily. On clear nights it makes a spectacular sight. Arenal’s last major eruption in July 1968 killed 89 people

[It's just information!] Mountain Baekdu, a dormant volcano on the border between North Korea and China, is showing signs of a possible eruption in the near future, experts warned Tuesday. "Baekdu could erupt anytime soon," said geologist Yoon Sung-hyo at Pusan National University, who has monitored the nation's highest mountain (2,744 meters) for any changes. "A variety of indicators are backing this scenario. The thing we should try to predict is when. It's clear it's imminent." The geologist cautiously raised speculation that an eruption could take place in a couple of years. According to historical records, Baekdu was an active volcano. Major activity in the 1960s created a caldera on its peak, whose circumference is nearly 14 kilometers with an average depth of 213 meters and maximum of 384 meters. Volcanic ash from this eruption has been found as far away as the southern part of Hokkaido, Japan, according to records. Small-scale eruptions were recorded roughly on a centurial basis - in 1413, 1597, 1668 and 1702. The latest volcanic eruption recorded at the 2,744-meter mountain was back in 1903. The mountain has stayed inactive since then, leaving it categorized by scientists as dormant.
The Chinese government developed the mountain and surrounding areas as a tourist destination drawing tens of thousands of visitors from around the world each year - many of them from South Korea. Yet, "unusual signs," including minor trembling among others, began to emerge in June 2002 and a 7.3-magnitude earthquake rattled areas in the vicinity of Baekdu, according to geologists. The frequency of the quakes has notably increased since then. "It seems that a shockwave from the quake reactivated magma approximately 30 kilometers beneath the mountain," said Prof. Hong Tae-kyung at Yonsei University's department of earth system sciences in Seoul. "The more frequent these are, the higher the possibility of an eruption." According to a recent TV program based on interviews with officials at a Chinese institute monitoring volcanic activity at Baekdu, minor quakes which are too weak to be felt by human beings take place nearly 100 times per day. "We saw the number steeply increase in recent years," the program quoted an official as saying. The program showed crumbled stone steps leading toward the top of a scenic waterfall at the heart of the mountain, explaining they recently fell apart due to frequent trembling in the region. Among other indicators backing the scenario of a future eruption is the height of Baekdu, which has grown nearly 10 centimeters since 2002. Experts say bloated magma, a precondition of eruption, is gradually pushing up the height of the mountain as well as the temperature on the surface. On October 1, 2006, a Russian satellite found the surface temperature of the mountain notably higher than before. The finding came just days after North Korea conducted an underground nuclear bomb test in its northern region, indicating the test was a catalyst reactivating the magma, analysts said.
The increase in the number of withered evergreen trees on the mountain may be another indicator. "It was confirmed that pollutants from the surrounding areas are not to blame. If so, toxic gases spewing from the volcano could be a possible culprit," Yoon said. If the eruption is major in scale, it would bring about massive consequences to the two Koreas as well as the surrounding states, including China, Japan and Russia. "The amount of volcanic ash from the most violent eruption nearly 1,000 years ago was enough to cover the entire the Korean peninsula to a height of 1.2 meters," he said, citing scientific studies. "Baekdu's caldera contains nearly two billion tons of water. If it evaporates into the air all of a sudden mixed with volcanic ash of a major eruption, it would be blown to the east and consequently engulf Vladivostok in Russia and Hokkaido in northern Japan."
Baekdu Mountain is stratovolcano whose cone is truncated by a large caldera, about 5 km (3.1 miles) wide and 850 m (2,789 ft) deep, partially filled by the waters of Heaven Lake.

Scientists are raising the alert level for Cleveland Volcano in Alaska's Aleutian chain after satellite data has indicated thermal anomalies. The Alaska Volcano Observatory today raised the level to advisory status. There is no real-time seismic network at the volcano. Scientists say unrest there is frequent, and short-lived explosions with ash plumes up to 20,000 feet can occur without warning and may not be detected by satellites. Cleveland is about 940 miles southwest of Anchorage, on a remote and uninhabited island in the Aleutians chain. The observatory says the last significant eruption of the 5,676-foot volcano began in February 2001 and eventually produced a lava flow that reached the ocean. There were minor eruptions in January, June and October 2009.

The Bezymyanny volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula has started to erupt, the Kamchatka branch of the geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences told Itar-Tass. The intensification of the giant mount’s activity was registered at 00:30, local time (16:30, MSK on May 31). The most active phase lasted for 20 minutes, scientists say. During this period the volcano was spewing ash that stretched in a plume towards the Sea of Okhotsk (west of the volcano). According to specialists, the ash plume has stretched for 20 kilometres. A small ash fall was registered in the Kozyrevsk settlement (40 km from the volcano) on Kamchatka. A hot rock and mud flow came down the volcano. The aviation code Red has been given to the volcano. All concerned services have been informed about the danger that the volcanic ash may present for aircraft, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) reported. The eruption’s intensity has subsided, as compared with the initial phase, but the giant mount maintains activity, specialists noted. Bezymyanny is one of 29 active volcanoes of Kamchatka. Its height is about 2,800 metres above sea level. Its eruptions are explosive. They occur one or two times a year and may last from several hours to several days. In recent years scientists have managed to predict the periods of its activity intensification rather correctly. Bezymyanny is an active stratovolcano in Kamchatka. The volcano’s name means “nameless,” and it was considered to be extinct before the 1955 eruption. Bezymyanny is located on the southeast slope of the extinct volcano Kamen. Its greatest eruption happened in 1955-1956 which lowered the top of the mountain by about 200 m (600 ft). The surrounding landscape of the mountain was changed by a lateral blast that flattened the area with thick ash and pyroclastic flow-like materials. The 1956 eruption of Bezymianny was similar to the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in the United States. During the 1956 eruption, a debris avalanche removed 0.5 cubic kilometres of material and also produced a “directed blast” as magma became exposed at the surface. A horseshoe-shaped crater was also formed, although it has been largely filled. Then the volcano that was 3,080 metres high, during a short period of time became lower by 280 metres. Its recent eruption was observed last winter. The volcano is located in the central part of the Klyuchevskaya group 385 kilometres northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The Nearby populated localities are Klyuchi and Kozyrevsk.

Scientists are warning airlines and tourists of the danger of ash and volcanic rocks erupting from Mt Yasur on Vanuatu’s Tanna island. Wellington’s Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre has reported an ash cloud covering 100 nautical square miles and more than 1.8 kilometres high within the volcano’s vicinity. A geohazard technical advisor for the Vanuatu government, Sylvain Todman, says tourists are now banned from visiting the volcano and the government’s assessing the impact for the ten villages nearby which are being affected by gas and ash spewing from its crater. “We saw very large explosions and important explosions outside the crater rim. All these bombs could reach all the villages around the volcano. We have a new kind of activity with a lot of ash falls, very large ash plumes and very important gas.” New Caledonia’s domestic airline has cancelled or delayed several flights to Mare and Lifou in the Loyalty Islands.

Description:
Pilots and seamen in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are being warned to keep away from an underwater volcano which has erupted. The Governor Benigno Fitial declared a State of Emergency at the weekend following the eruption of the volcano south of Sarigan Island. Sarigan is uninhabited, but travellers are being cautioned to keep at least five nautical miles clear. Our correspondent in Saipan, Mark Rabago, says the Emergency Management Office is monitoring the impact but so far little is known. “Current evidence points to a source being the submarine sea mouth, south of Sarigan, that there was a cloud that contained either ash or water vapour that appeared north of Anatahan volcano and now coming towards the CNMI and Guam.” Mark Rabago says a team of scientists is expected to investigate the eruption.

Situation:
The Pacaya Volcano erupted on Friday. It is located 50 kilometers south of the capital of Guatemala, Guatemala City. Throughout the evening and night, volcanic ash fell in the municipalities of Amatitlán, Villa Nueva, and Guatemala City. President Álvaro Colom's government has decreed a State of Public Calamity in the Escuintla, Sacatepéquez and Guatemala departments, for 15 days or more, so the authorities can do their job correctly. The emergency response is being coordinated by the National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (CONRED). The eruption was followed by several tremors. All flights in and out of Guatemala City's La Aurora International Airport, have been suspended. The eruption has caused many casualties, among them the death of Aníbal Archila, NOTI7's reporter, who was one of the first reporting the event.

Description:
Hundreds of people sought to escape the eruption of the Tungurahua volcano Wednesday in Ecuador, days after the evacuation of around 2,500 locals. Volcanic activity in the Tungurahua, 5,010 metres high and located around 130 kilometres away from Quito, intensified Wednesday, with explosions and other sounds that scared locals. Residents further sought to move some 420 head of cattle away from the volcano, because pastures have become covered with ash. The Tungarahua's eruptive process started in 1999, although the level of alert has varied since then. Four years ago, a strong eruption caused damage to roads and agriculture.
