กองกำลังรัฐบาลซีเรีย ยังเดินหน้าถล่มโจมตีเมืองฮอมส์ ฐานที่มั่นของฝ่ายต่อต้านทางภาคกลางอย่างหนักต่อไปเมื่อวานนี้ ทำให้มีผู้เสียชีวิตอีกอย่างน้อย 16 คน

กลุ่มนักเคลื่อนไหวของซีเรีย เปิดเผยว่า กองกำลังซีเรียเปิดการถล่มโจมตีเขตบาบาอามาร์ของเมืองฮอมส์อย่างหนักด้วยปืนใหญ่และปืนรถถัง โดยใช้เวลา 2-3 ชั่วโมง แต่กองกำลังซีเรียยังไม่เคลื่อนเข้ามาเพื่อยึดคืนเขตบาบาอามาร์

เหยื่อการโจมตี 2 คน เป็นเด็ก ขณะที่กลุ่มนักเคลื่อนไหวเตือนว่า หากปล่อยให้สถานการณ์เช่นนี้ดำเนินต่อไป จะเกิดหายนะใหญ่หลวงทางมนุษยธรรมขึ้นในเมืองฮอมส์

President Obama announced today that funding for the military will be cut back, but at the same time the US has sent thousands of US troops to Israel. The two countries are doing a joint exercise called "Austere Challenge 12." The exercise is meant to develop defense systems and collaboration between American and Israeli forces. US officials have denied this is in retaliation to Iran's war games and allege this was planned way in advance. Iran is accusing the EU of waging an economic war. It's in response to Europe considering banning Iranian oil imports in the coming weeks. There's already a verbal standoff over sanctions imposed by the U.S. at the end of last year, aimed at pressing Iran into abandoning its nuclear programme. Tehran threatened to block a key maritime trade route in the Persian Gulf, and later backed off, but is still warning U.S. ships against sailing in the area. Iran will reportedly hold another naval drill next month. But anti-war activist John Rees sees Western worries over Iran's supposed nuclear ambitions, as an excuse to curtail Iranian influence in the region.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will meet with US President Barack Obama in Washington on March 5.

According to Obama's National Security Adviser Tom Donilon the two leaders will discuss the "full range of security issues of mutual concern."

Netanyahu will be in Washington to address the annual policy conference of the influential pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, which will be held on March 4-6.

Donilon just concluded three days of talks with Israeli leaders in Jerusalem amid escalating tensions over on Iran's nuclear program. He met with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and others.

The White House described the talks as a reflection of the Obama administration's "unshakeable commitment to Israel's security."

However, officials in Israel and the US have been increasingly at odds on how to deal with Iran, which both - along with other Western nations and Gulf Arab states - say is seeking nuclear weapons.

Israeli officials are said to favor a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities saying the window for decisive action is closing as Iran "enters the immunity zone."

The Obama administration insists sanctions are having the desired effect and need more time.

Previously, Netanyahu publicly backed the White House led sanctions - but is said to have expressed reservations in closed-door sessions of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and defense committee.

However, last week Netanyahu openly said Western sanctions are "not working." The Prime Minister's change in public posture came after a series of terror attacks targeting Israeli diplomats in Asia, which he accused Iran of mounting.

His comments came shortly before Defense Intelligence Agency director Lieutenant General Ronald Burgess told US lawmakers Thursday "we assess that Tehran is not close to agreeing to abandon its nuclear program."

Critics of Obama's sanctions-only policy note that North Korea succeeded in detonating two nuclear weapons in secret tests despite crippling sanctions, and widespread poverty and starvation in the country.

The US has urged Israel not to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. Observers say recent leaks in the Obama administration appear to have been designed to hamstring an Israeli strike on Iran.

On January 31, Sen. Diane Feinstein leaked that Mossad chief Tamir Pardo was in Washington for secret talks on a possible Iran strike.

Then, just days later, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta revealed Israel's likely timetable for such an attack when he told reporters "a strong likelihood" that Israel would strike Iran in April, May or June,

US chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey on Sunday said an attack on Iran is "not prudent."

Dempsey told CNN that Israel has the capability to strike Iran and delay the Iranians "probably for a couple of years. But some of the targets are probably beyond their reach."

However, proponents of Obama's policy note that the White House continues to say it needs more time, which an Israeli strike would almost certainly provide.

Dempsey also expressed concern that an Israeli attack could spark reprisals against US targets in the Gulf or Afghanistan, where American forces are based.

"That's the question with which we all wrestle. And the reason that we think that it's not prudent at this point to decide to attack Iran," Dempsey said.

However, senior Israeli officials in private conversations have expressed the belief that the White House desperately wants to avoid a spike in oil prices a strike might cause as the presidential elections looms on its political horizon.

The weak US economy has been in a holding pattern and Federal Reserve officials have frozen interest rates saying they do not expect recovery to begin until 2014.

British Foreign Minister William Hague told the BBC that London was convinced diplomacy was the only way to deal with Iran.

"I don't think a wise thing at this moment is for Israel to launch a military attack on Iran," he said. "I think Israel like everyone else in the world should be giving a real chance to the approach we have adopted on very serious economic sanctions and economic pressure and the readiness to negotiate with Iran."

Israeli analysts, however, say that what is "wise" for Israel may not be what is wise for Europe, stuck in the quagmire of a sovereign debt crisis, or the United States.

While Western capitals are primarily concerned with the economic impact a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities may have, officials in Jerusalem are primarily concerned with the potential impact of not attacking.

Iranian officials have repeatedly called for the Jewish state's destruction and have referred to Israel as a "one bomb state."

In Jerusalem, an Iranian nuclear weapon is an existential risk leaders have said they don't believe Israel can afford.

       เอเอฟพี - กองเรือรบอิหร่านแล่นเข้าสู่ทะเลเมดิเตอร์เรเนียนแล้ววันนี้ (18) หลังจากผ่านคลองสุเอซ โดยมีเป้าหมายเพื่อแสดงแสนยานุภาพของเตหะรานให้ประจักษ์ต่อบรรดาประเทศในภูมิภาคนี้ ฮาบิบอลเลาะห์ ซอยารี ผู้บัญชาการทหารเรือเผย
       
       “กองเรือยุทธศาสตร์ของสาธารณรัฐอิสลามอิหร่านผ่านคลองสุเอซเป็นครั้งที่ 2 นับตั้งแต่การปฏิวัติอิสลาม (ปี 1979)” ซอยารีกล่าว โดยสำนักข่าวไออาร์เอ็นเอรายงาน

Saudis Grant Israel Air Corridor To Attack Iran?

Although according to a report by Israels Haaretz Service a member of the Saudi royal family - Saudi envoy to the U.K. Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf - has since issued a denial and reiterated Saudi Arabia's rejection of any violation of its territories or airspace, the UK Times Online reported saturday quoting an unnamed U.S. defense source that "In the week that the UN Security Council imposed a new round of sanctions on Tehran, defence sources in the Gulf say that Riyadh has agreed to allow Israel to use a narrow corridor of its airspace in the north of the country to shorten the distance for a bombing run on Iran."

"To ensure the Israeli bombers pass unmolested, Riyadh has carried out tests to make certain its own jets are not scrambled and missile defence systems not activated. Once the Israelis are through, the kingdom’s air defences will return to full alert. ", continues the Times article.

Times Online, June 12, 2010:
"The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way," said a US defence source in the area. "They have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren't scrambled and no one gets shot down. This has all been done with the agreement of the [US] State Department."

Sources in Saudi Arabia say it is common knowledge within defence circles in the kingdom that an arrangement is in place if Israel decides to launch the raid. Despite the tension between the two governments, they share a mutual loathing of the regime in Tehran and a common fear of Iran's nuclear ambitions. "We all know this. We will let them [the Israelis] through and see nothing," said one.

The four main targets for any raid on Iran would be the uranium enrichment facilities at Natanz and Qom, the gas storage development at Isfahan and the heavy-water reactor at Arak. Secondary targets include the lightwater reactor at Bushehr, which could produce weapons-grade plutonium when complete.

The targets lie as far as 1,400 miles (2,250km) from Israel; the outer limits of their bombers’ range, even with aerial refuelling. An open corridor across northern Saudi Arabia would significantly shorten the distance. An airstrike would involve multiple waves of bombers, possibly crossing Jordan, northern Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Aircraft attacking Bushehr, on the Gulf coast, could swing beneath Kuwait to strike from the southwest.
The Times article goes on to note that "Passing over Iraq would require at least tacit agreement to the raid from Washington. So far, the Obama Administration has refused to give its approval as it pursues a diplomatic solution to curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Military analysts say Israel has held back only because of this failure to secure consensus from America and Arab states. "

Both Israel and the United States have rattled sabers at Iran for years.

In January 2006 Hussein Sharifi, a retired Iranian military officer who served in the Iranian Imperial Army and Islamic Republic Army and now resides in the United States, in response to what had been even before then many threatening comments and psychological warfare against Iran, wrote an article published by Payvands Iran News titled What is the response of Iran to the U.S. or Israelis threat? as an attempt to outline what Iran's response would be to any attack on it's territory by either Israel or the U.S.:
"We know they have a plan," [said] Jamshid who has a political post in the Basij paramilitary organization, "We have many plans too. Every country has different plans for offense or defense of her country. A few months after the invasion of Iraq, George Bush, who was euphoric of his quick victory asked Donald Rumsfeld to devise a plan for attacking Iran. For this plan they needed the help of Iranians expatriates in the U.S.. We could get a great deal of intelligence regarding the American units and commanders, intensions, in addition to finding a lot about their structures and weaponries."

When I asked them what Iran would do if the U.S. was serious in attacking Iranian nuclear sites, Hussein said, "Then they open hell's gates towards themselves," and smiled. When I asked him to elaborate more, he continued, "In the papers there is always talk about air attacks on Iranian installations by Israel or the U.S. This type of psychological warfare is used to divert our attention. We know for a fact that no two Western wars are similar and we are sure that the Israelis would not risk an air attack. We know there are at least three possible scenarios of attacking these sites, including using their submarines in the Persian Gulf, commandos from the sea, or Mojahedin Khalgh trained in Israel and Azerbaijan to destroy the Bushehr nuclear power plant from the inside, but these are only plans. We have even more plans for how to confront them as well. This is a game of chess and we have practiced many different scenarios." Ali, another revolutionary guard, smiled and responded, "We have indicated directly and indirectly that with the first bullet shot at Iran, the map of the Middle East will be changed forever. Many American puppet regimes and dictators will fall and there will never be a government like what is now in Israel. The Apartheid system in Israel will be dismantled and a democratic government which embraces Jews, Christians, and Moslems equally will come to power. Millions of Palestinians will return home and millions of European and American migrants will return back from Palestine to their countries."

When I mentioned the immense firepower of the U.S. and the chemical, biological, and nuclear arsenal of Israel Hussein smiled and said, "We are ready, bring them on." Then after chuckling he said, "We have our sensors in place in the U.S., Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, and most Arab countries. We know ahead of the time when they are coming, and since Mr. Bush has given American democracy along with the preemptive strike as the right of everybody in the world, we are going to use it and use it effectively. We are present in most of the military briefings of the U.S. in Afghanistan and Iraq. As soon as we see that it is imminent we hit them and hit them hard...

Whether the U.S. or Israel attacks us, we will consider it as Israeli attack since we know how much power they have over the U.S. political and decision-making system." If the attack happens, that will trigger the nuclear efforts of Iran. We will definitely go underground and speed up nuclear weapon production, since there will be no choice except to have them and have them soon. Right now we do not need nuclear weapons which are a liability rather than an asset, because we do not have hostile enemy which we cannot smash when we want to. The country has been able to stand on its feet for the last 2,500 years and will do so in the future. Look at the last war we had with Iraq, which by the way, was shortest war we had during the last 200 years."
It would seem that Israel may be determined to do everything possible to create a self fulfilled prophecy.

Iran Spooks the World with Higher Oil Prices

Surging gasoline prices are stuffing Iran’s pockets as sanctions – so far – are not slowing down Iran’s nuclear race. ”Tehran is immune to sanctions,” The London Mail and Guardian reported Monday, and Iran may have the last laugh.

Sanctions theoretically would work, but China and Russian have led a large contingent of Asian and eastern countries that have refused to cooperate with the American-backed moves aimed at crippling Iran’s oil-based economy.

Iran has lived with spiraling inflation and a 20 percent devaluation of its currency since President Barack Obama stiffened sanctions earlier this year. However, plenty of countries are eager for oil, especially at discounts. Coupled with Iran’s counter-sanctions against some European countries, Iran is enjoying the best of both worlds – higher oil prices, continuing demand, causing a recession in the Western world and having a chance to mock the United States, which it constantly describes as feeble.

Iran this week refused to load a Green tanker with refined crude oil. Previously, Iran has said it will ban exporting oil to Britain, France and at least five other European nations.
The Obama administration is increasingly sure that sanctions will not stop Iran’s race for nuclear capability and that the military option eventually will be the only option, the London newspaper wrote.

The question is when?
The United States is more concerned with the moment before Iran can build a nuclear weapon, while Israel’s attention is on the increasing impossibility of its staging a pre-emptive strike as Iran continues to fortify its nuclear installations deep underground.
Another question is how much Iran is bluffing about its nuclear program, which has been damaged by computer viruses and may be operating with equipment far less functional than is claimed.

One additional factor in the timing of a military strike is the fact that the 2012 presidential election comes in a year when Americans are increasingly fed up with their country’s intervention overseas, especially when the economy is barely growing.
Although analysts are discarding the probability of an Israel strike before the elections, if at all, the talk of war has spiked the price of crude oil to $110 a barrel, the highest in years. The price of Brent crude passed the $125 a barrel mark. The record high price for crude is $148, reached in 2008.

"It is not that the Israelis believe the Iranians are on the brink of a bomb. It is that the Israelis may fear that the Iranian program is on the brink of becoming out of reach of an Israeli military strike, which means it creates a now-or-never moment," Colin Kahl, recently the U.S. deputy assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East, told the Mail and Guardian.

The specter of a spiking oil prices causing a new recession is real. High oil prices cause inflation not only at the pump but also for oil-based products, and higher prices in turn can dampen demand, cause a downturn in production and in the end leave more people unemployed.

Global oil prices may hit $200 if Israel attacks Iran: Energy expert




An Indian energy expert says global oil prices could hit USD 200 per barrel in case of a possible Israeli attack on Iran.

“The replacement [for Iran oil] has to come from Saudi Arabia and there is the problem. We reckon overall global spare capacity is around 1.6 to 1.7 million barrels per day (mbpd), but that’s clearly not enough to offset 2.3 mbpd exports that Iran gives to the world.”

An Indian energy expert says global oil prices could hit USD 200 per barrel in case of a possible Israeli attack on Iran over the latter country’s nuclear energy program.


In an interview with the NDTV Profit network, Amrita Sen, a commodity strategist at Barclays Capital, noted that the price hike would have a powerful negative impact on Europe’s ailing economies which are already suffering from a euro weak against the dollar.

The expert added that there are other factors at work which may further worsen the negative effects of such an oil shock.

She stated that some smaller oil-producing countries like Yemen, Sudan and Nigeria, have already lost a total of a million barrels per day of their output while the energy demand in big Asian economies like India and China is rapidly soaring.

As a result of a combination of these factors, Sen said, “oil inventories have been drawing down despite the output being above 10 million barrels per day.”

Asked whether Saudi Arabia can compensate for the absence of Iran's oil from global markets, the expert stated that Riyadh’s surplus capacity was not high enough to serve such a purpose.

“The replacement [for Iran oil] has to come from Saudi Arabia and there is the problem. We reckon overall global spare capacity is around 1.6 to 1.7 million barrels per day (mbpd), but that’s clearly not enough to offset 2.3 mbpd exports that Iran gives to the world,” Sen said.

She noted that in addition to the situation in Iran, the crises in two other major oil producers, namely Iraq and Nigeria, have reduced the global surplus oil production capacity to below one million barrels a day.

“It is not just Iran; there is Iraq, there is Nigeria. Anytime you go down to spare capacity, which is less than one mbpd, automatically the prices will rise. You should have at least a five-percent buffer. Inventories have been low as well. So there is not enough buffer in the oil market at present,” she added.

After the European Union imposed new embargoes on oil imports from Iran, Tehran responded by announcing on February 15 that it was cutting oil exports to six EU countries.

Following the announcement, global oil prices reached their highest levels in nine months with Brent crude for delivery in April hitting USD 124.31 per barrel.

Meanwhile, the world's largest oil trader, Vitol, has also warned that crude prices could spike to above USD 150 per barrel if tensions with Iran escalate further.

เอเจนซี - ประธานาธิบดีบารัค โอบามาแห่งสหรัฐฯ ร้องขอนายกรัฐมนตรีเบนจามิน เนทันยาฮู ให้เวลามาตรการแซงก์ชันในการยับยั้งความทะเยอทะยานด้านนิวเคลียร์ของอิหร่าน ทว่า ผู้นำอิสราเอลยังไม่มีท่าทีสนับสนุนการแก้ไขปัญหาโดยไม่ใช้กำลังทหาร และว่าประเทศของเขาต้องเป็นผู้ควบคุมชะตากรรมของตนเอง

ผู้นำทั้ง 2 ประเทศ ซึ่งมีความสัมพันธ์ที่ตึงเครียด พยายามหาทางออกร่วมกันในการรับมือกับวิกฤตนิวเคลียร์อิหร่าน ขณะที่หารือกันในทำเนียบขาว แต่แถลงการณ์ที่เปิดเผยต่อสาธารณะกลับชี้ให้เห็นความแตกต่างของวิธีในการ ป้องกันไม่ให้เตหะรานพัฒนาอาวุธปรมาณู

สำหรับการเจรจาที่สำคัญที่สุดครั้งหนึ่งในรอบหลายปีนี้ โอบามา และเนทันยาฮูไม่ได้กล่าวถึงความเห็นที่ไม่ลงรอยกันมานานเกี่ยวกับสิ่งที่ วอชิงตันเกรงว่ารัฐยิวจะเร่งโจมตีโครงการนิวเคลียร์ของอิหร่านภายในไม่กี่ เดือนนี้

ขณะที่ โอบามาก็พยายามแสดงให้ผู้นำอิสราเอลมั่นใจว่า สหรัฐฯ ยังเก็บวิธีการใช้กำลังทหารไว้เป็นทางเลือกสุดท้าย ซึ่งทางยิวก็สนับสนุน แต่เขายังเรียกร้องให้อิสราเอลอดทนอดกลั้น และรอให้มาตรการแซงก์ชัน และวิธีการทางการทูตได้ทำงานเสียก่อน
