นายสิทธิชัย โภไคยอุดม รมว.ไอซีที ระบุ ศูนย์เตือนภัยพิบัติแห่งชาติจะเร่งติดตั้งระบบเตือนภัยแผ่นดินไหว ในลักษณะหอเตือนภัย ตามจุดสำคัญทั่วประเทศ

นายสิทธิชัย โภไคยอุดม รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศและการสื่อสาร หรือ ไอซีที กล่าวภายหลังตรวจเยี่ยมสถานีตรวจวัดแผ่นดินไหวเชียงใหม่ ว่า ศูนย์เตือนภัยพิบัติแห่งชาติจะเร่งติดตั้งระบบเตือนภัยแผ่นดินไหว ในลักษณะหอเตือนภัย ซึ่งเป็นการขยายการติดตั้งต่อเนื่องจากระบบเตือนภัยสึนามิทางภาคใต้ เพื่อแจ้งเตือนการเกิดแผ่นดินไหว โดยเน้นติดตั้งจุดสำคัญ ก่อนจะติดตั้งให้ครอบคลุมทั่วประเทศ ซึ่งจะเริ่มดำเนินการภายในปีงบประมาณนี้

รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงไอซีที กล่าวต่อว่า จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เป็นหนึ่งในจังหวัดที่มีความเสี่ยงต่อการเกิดแผ่นดินไหว เพราะอยู่ในแนวรอยเลื่อน ดังนั้นจำเป็นจะต้องวางระบบป้องกันความเสียหายจากแผ่นดินไหว โดยเฉพาะการก่อสร้างอาคารสูงให้มั่นคงแข็งแรง เพื่อรองรับแรงสั่นสะเทือนมากกว่าอาคารทั่วไป

นายสมิทธ กล่าวว่า เนื่องจากขณะนี้เกิดแผนดินไหวเกิดขึ้นบ่อยครั้งในรอยเลื่อนที่มีพื้นที่รอบ ๆ ประเทศไทย ดังนั้น ในวันที่ 7 มิถุนายนนี้ เวลา 09.30 น.คณะกรรมการแผ่นไหวแห่งชาติ ซึ่งมี นายสิทธิชัย โภไคยอุดม รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงไอซีที เป็นประธาน จะนัดประชุมคณะกรรมการฯ ครั้งแรก ที่กระทรวงไอซีที โดยเชิญหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้อง ผู้เชี่ยวชาญ และนักวิชาการผู้ชำนาญการด้านแผ่นดินไหวทั่วประเทศร่วมประชุม เพื่อศึกษาสถานการณ์ของการเกิดแผ่นดินไหวขนาดใหญ่ต่อเนื่องในรอยเลื่อนของประเทศไทยที่มีพลังอยู่ และรอยเลื่อนรอบประเทศไทยที่มีพลัง และอาจมีผลกระทบต่อประเทศไทยได้
ที่ปรึกษารัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงไอซีที กล่าวว่า ในการประชุมครั้งนี้ ตนจะเสนอข้อสังเกตการเกิดแผ่นดินไหวบ่อยครั้งและรุนแรงมากขึ้นในช่วงนี้ อาจได้รับผลกระทบจากการเกิดแผ่นดินไหวครั้งใหญ่เมื่อวันที่ 26 ธันวาคม 2547 ที่ก่อให้เกิดคลื่นยักษ์สึนามิ ในพื้นที่ 6 จังหวัดภาคใต้ฝั่งอันดามันของประเทศไทย ซึ่งสถิติการเกิดแผ่นดินไหวหลังจากนั้นอีก 2 ปี เกิดขึ้นบ่อยครั้งและต่อเนื่องมากขึ้น เพื่อให้ที่ประชุมพิจารณาและหามาตรการป้องกันต่อไป
นายสมิทธ กล่าวว่า สำหรับรอยเลื่อนรอบประเทศไทยที่ควรจับตาคือรอยเลื่อนสะแกง ในประเทศพม่า เพราะเป็นรอยเลื่อนใหญ่ และมีรอยเลื่อนแขนงในประเทศไทย คือ รอยเลื่อนศรีสวัสดิ์ และรอยเลื่อนเจดีย์สามองค์ จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี เพราะจากประวัติศาสตร์ เคยเกิดแผ่นดินไหวขนาด 8 ริกเตอร์ จากรอยเลื่อนสะแกง เมื่อ 74 ปีที่แล้ว หากครบวงจร อาจจะเกิดแผ่นดินไหวซ้ำขึ้นอีกได้ ซึ่งอาจมีผลกระทบต่อประเทศไทย และกรุงเทพฯ
นอกจากนี้ ตนจะเสนอที่ประชุมคณะกรรมการแผ่นดินไหวแห่งชาติ เรื่องที่นายธนเษก อัศวานุวัตร ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดพะเยา มีแผนดำเนินงานโครงการกู้วัดติโลกอาราม อายุ 500 ปี ที่จมอยู่ในกว๊านพะเยา เพราะถือว่าเป็นประวัติศาสตร์ของประเทศไทยและของโลก ซึ่งเกิดแผ่นดินไหวขนาดใหญ่จากรอยเลื่อยเชียงแสน ทำให้เมือง วัดบ้านเรือน และประชาชนเสียชีวิตจำนวนมาก และจมอยู่ใต้พื้นดิน จนเกิดเป็นกว๊านพะเยาในปัจจุบัน ดังนั้น ควรจะมีการสำรวจว่ามีวัด มีเมืองจริงหรือไม่ เพื่อประกาศให้ชาวโลกรู้ ซึ่งขณะนี้ต่างประเทศก็ให้ความสนในเรื่องนี้มากเช่นกัน และหากที่ประชุมเห็นด้วย ก็ต้องนำเสนอเข้าที่ประชุมคณะรัฐมนตรี (ครม.) อนุมัติ เพื่อหารือกับหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้อง เช่น กรมศิลปากร กรมประมง เป็นต้น

เจ้าหน้าที่สำนักงานธรณีวิทยาในเขตนิงเอ๋อ พื้นที่ภัยพิบัติรุนแรง เปิดเผยว่า ทางการมีเต็นท์ชั่วคราวไม่พอรองรับผู้ประสบภัย ทำให้ผู้ประสบภัยจำนวนมากต้องอาศัยหาที่นอนในบริเวณค่ายผู้อพยพที่ทางการจัดไว้ชั่วคราว ขณะรอการขนส่งเต็นท์ที่พักจากเขตพื้นที่ใกล้เคียงส่งมาช่วยเหลือ โดยมีผู้ประสบภัยจำนวนมากไม่กล้ากลับเข้าไปในบ้านเรือนตัวเอง เนื่องจากเกรงว่าจะได้รับอันตรายจากคลื่นสั่นสะเทือน (อาฟเตอร์ช็อก) ที่ยังคงเกิดขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่องกว่า 300 ครั้ง
ทางด้านรายงานจากโรงพยาบาล ระบุว่า ยอดผู้ได้รับบาดเจ็บกว่า 300 ราย กว่า 20 ราย อยู่ในอาการสาหัสมาก ขณะที่ยอดผู้เสียชีวิตยังอยู่ที่ 3 ราย
มณฑลยูนนานของจีน เป็นพื้นที่ที่มีแผ่นดินไหวบ่อยครั้ง ในระหว่างปี 2544-2549 มีเหตุแผ่นดินไหวความรุนแรงตั้งแต่ 5.0 ริกเตอร์ เกิดขึ้นถึง 27 ครั้ง และเมื่อปี 2541 มีเหตุแผ่นดินไหวความรุนแรง 7.1 ริกเตอร์ ใกล้ชายแดนพม่า มีผู้เสียชีวิต 930 ราย. –สำนักข่าวไทย
