The sound of the eruptions was audible to the Serang district in Banten, which is 40 kilometers away. “Anak Krakatau's activities has been escalating since Oct. 27,” said Sikin, a staff member at the Anak Krakatau monitoring post in Cinangka, Serang, as quoted by SCTV on Friday. According to Sikin, the volcano's status was increased to “be alert,” or two levels before a big eruption, since September. However, the situation is still considered safe for fishermen. “Fishermen must be cautious and try not to get too close to the mountain and maintain a minimum 4-kilometer distance,” Sikin said. Increased activity is also building up at the Galunggung volcano in Tasikmalaya, West Java. Heri Supartono, head of the Galunggung monitoring post, said that the volcano had triggered 34 earthquakes this month. “In September, there were only four volcanic earthquakes, but Galunggung's status is still normal because the water temperature around is still normal,” Heri said. “We monitor it every day and report the result to the Tasikmalaya municipal government,” he added. The 2,167-meter high volcano has erupted three times between 1822 and 1983. Another volcano, Dempo, at Pagaralam, South Sumatra, also showed signs of increased activity. “There have been tens of volcanic or tectonic earthquakes, but the magnitudes are relatively small so they don't affect the normal status of Demo volcano,” Slamet, the head of Dempo monitoring post, told state news agency Antara on Friday.

    ภูเขาไฟที่รัสเซียก็ปะทุ กลุ่มควันกระจายขึ้นไปสูง กว่า 10 กิโลเมตร (สูงจัง)

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: Russia [Asia] Kamchatka Peninsula Klyuchevskaya Sopka Volcano and the Shiveluch volcano

    Situation:
Two volcanoes that erupted on the far–eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, blanketing a town with dust and spreading ash clouds across the Pacific, have mostly stopped spewing ash and flights are no longer diverted, Russian officials said Friday. Eurasia's highest active volcano, the Klyuchevskaya Sopka, was pumping out insignificant amounts of dust and the Shiveluch volcano, 45 miles (70 kilometers) northeast, had ceased all activity, the Emergencies Ministry reported on its website. Ash clouds from the remote volcanoes had billowed up to 33,000 feet (10 kilometers) after they erupted Thursday and had spread east across the Pacific Ocean. Schools in the vicinity of the volcanoes remained closed Friday due to ash buildup. The powder had coated the nearby town of Ust–Kamchatsk, reducing visibility to only a few feet (meters) and turning buildings ghostly white. Emergency officials said the town's 5,000 residents weren't in any immediate danger but urged them to stay indoors and tightly close doors and windows to avoid inhaling ash particles that could lead to respiratory illnesses and allergic reactions.

Businesses in Ust–Kamchatsk quickly closed and all streets were shut down to traffic. Scientists warned that ashes will likely continue falling on the area for at least 10 days. Ust–Kamchatsk is 45 miles (70 kilometers) east of Shiveluch and 75 miles (120 kilometers) northeast of Klyuchevskaya Sopka, and winds blew ash from both on the town. Jen Burke, a meteorologist with the Alaska Aviation Weather Unit, said Thursday ash from the Shiveluch eruption — the larger of the two — was moving across the Bering Sea at a height of 25,000 feet (7,620 meters).

    อัพเดทสถานการณ์ภูเขาไฟทีไอซ์แลนด์ (คาดว่าไม่รุนแรงเท่าอีกลูกที่ปะทุไปครั้งก่อน)

    Event: Volcano Eruption
    Location: Iceland Grimsvotn Volcano

    Situation:
An Icelandic volcano has shown signs it could be about to burst into life, just months after an eruption from another volcano caused Europe's biggest air shutdown since World War II. "The water levels have tripled in (the river) Gigja since last night," water measurement specialist Gunnar Sigurdsson of the Icelandic Meteorological Institute said. The water flooding into the Gigja, on the Vatnajoekull glacier in eastern Iceland, comes from an icy lake in the crater of the Grimsvoetn volcano. Due to increased thermal temperatures, the lake and surrounding glacier area has melted, filling the crater to a point where it has spilled over and caused a so-called river-run, which in turn could easily set off an eruption. In 2004, a similar flood from the Grimsvoetn lake was closely followed by an eruption from what is considered Iceland's most active volcano. Mr Sigurdsson said an eruption was unlikely to occur "until the water levels in Gigja have reached a maximum. "I don't know when we can expect the levels to reach their highest point, but I suspect it will be in a few days," he said. Over the past 48 hours, the Meteorological Institute has also registered strong seismic activity in the area, and three moderate earthquakes ranging from 2.7 to 4.0 on the Richter scale.

However, Icelandic authorities were unable to say whether an eruption at Grimsvotn would hit air traffic as hard as in April when the Eyjafjoell volcano erupted, dispersing a massive cloud of ash that affected more than 100,000 flights and eight million passengers. "It is near impossible to say if Grimsvotn erupts, whether it will have an effect on air traffic at all," said Keflavik Airport spokeswoman Hjordis Gudmundsdottir, pointing out it would depend if the volcano spewed lava or ash. "If it is an ash eruption, then it would affect air traffic, but only if it is a strong eruption with ash clouds reaching significant heights," she said, adding "it will also depend on wind, so at this point it is hard to guess." Thorunn Skaftadottir, a geophysicist also with the Icelandic Meteorological Institute, said that any eruption from Grimsvotn would be an ash eruption. "However, the scale of the eruption will be much smaller than the Eyjafjoell eruption and I do not think it would have the same effect on air travel as Eyjafjoell did," she said.

    Event: Volcano Eruption
    Location: Iceland Grimsvotn Volcano

Situation: Meltwater flooding is from the Grimsvotn glacial lake in Iceland and could signal the volcano underneath is about to erupt, a spokeswoman at the Icelandic Civil Protection Department reported on Monday. In April, clouds of ash from an eruption under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier grounded flights across Europe for a week, causing billions of dollars in losses for airlines and other industries. Water now pouring from Iceland's biggest glacier, Vatnajokull, which sits on top of a number of volcanic hotspots, could be a sign of fresh geological activity, Civil Protection Department spokeswoman Gudrun Johannesdottir said. Eyjafjallajokull is about 100 km southeast of Vatnajokull. "We have to check if there will be an eruption," Johannesdottir said. "Sometimes it initiates an eruption when a glacial outburst flood starts, but not every the time. So we are monitoring the situation closely." The latest eruption at Grimsvotn, in 2004, caused short-term disruptions to airline traffic into Iceland.

    Event: Volcano Eruption
    Location: Iceland Grimsvotn Volcano

Situation: Torrents of water are pouring from a glacier that sits atop Iceland's most active volcano, an indication that the mountain is growing hotter and may be about to erupt, scientists said Monday. The flood that began Thursday at the Grimsvotn volcano is similar to one in 2004 that lasted five days and ended with an eruption that disrupted European air traffic, University of Iceland geophysicist Pall Einarsson said. In April, millions of air travelers around the world were grounded when ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajokul volcano led most northern European countries to close airspace for five days. There are no signs yet of the underground tremors that would signal an eruption at Grimsvotn, Icelandic Meteorological Office geophysicist Gunnar Gudmundsson said. Grimsvotn lies under 650 feet (200 meters) of ice on the Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland. In addition to 2004, it erupted in 1998 and 1996, causing flooding to a largely uninhabited plain around it. The flooding triggered by hot molten rock, or magma, from the volcano has been expanding a lake underneath the glacier, building pressure strong enough to send water pouring from under the ice cap. A rugged island in the north Atlantic, Iceland is one of the world's most volcanically active countries.

    มีภูเขาไฟในอินโดอีกสองลูก Karangetang and Ibu อยู่ในระดับที่กำลังจะระเบิด

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Indonesia Central Java / Yogyakarta Volcano Mt. Merapi
    Number of Deads: 36 person(s)
    Number of Injured: 39 person(s)
    Number of Evacuated: 40475 person(s)

Situation: Evacuees cringed and fled for cover Monday as an erupting volcano - one of 22 showing increased activity in Indonesia - let loose booming explosions of hot gas and debris, the latest blast in a deadly week. No new casualties were reported. The new blast from Mount Merapi came as Indonesia also struggles to respond to an earthquake-generated tsunami that devastated remote islands. The twin disasters, unfolding simultaneously on opposite ends of the seismically volatile country, have killed nearly 500 people and severely tested the government's emergency response network. In both events, the military has been called in to help. One of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, Merapi has killed 38 people since it started erupting a week ago. Even in the crowded government camps miles (kilometers) away, people still instinctively ran for shelter at the power of Monday's eruption, which was accompanied by several deafening explosions, said Subrandrio, an official in charge of monitoring Merapi's activity. About 69,000 people villagers have been evacuated from the area around its once-fertile slopes - now blanketed by gray ash - in central Java, 250 miles (400 kilometers) east of Jakarta, the capital. As massive clouds spilled from the glowing cauldron and billowed into the air, sending debris and ash cascaded nearly four miles (six kilometers) down the southeastern slopes, Subrandrio said. Local officials and witnesses initially described it as the biggest since the initial blast a week ago, but Surono, chief of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, said an explosion on Saturday was actually more powerful.

More than 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) to the west, meanwhile, a C-130 transport plane, six helicopters and four motorized boats were ferrying aid to the most distant corners of the Mentawai Islands, where last week's tsunami destroyed hundreds of homes, schools, churches and mosques. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said relief efforts must be sped up, expressing dismay it took days for aid to reach the isolated islands, though he acknowledged that violent storms have previously prevented most planes, helicopters and boats from operating. The tsunami death toll stood at 431 Monday after initially being raised to 450. The National Disaster Management Agency said on its website that the number dropped as officials double-checked reports to verify them. The number of missing was 88. Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 235 million people, straddles a series of fault lines and volcanoes known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire." The fault line that caused last week's 7.7-magnitude earthquake and killer wave that followed - and also the 2004 tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries - is the meeting point of the Eurasian and Pacific tectonic plates that have been pushing against and under each other for millions of years, causing huge stresses to build up. It runs the length of the west coast of Sumatra island.

Both earthquakes and volcanos can be related to movements in the overlapping plates that form the earth's crust. As plates slide against or under each other, molten rock from the layer of mantle can break the surface via a volcano, or create energy released in an earthquake. The government has raised alert levels of 21 other volcanoes to the second- and third- highest levels in the last two months because they have shown an increase in activity, said Syamsul Rizal, a state volcanologist, said monday. Many of those are already rumbling and belching out heavy black ash.

Indonesia has several volcanos smoldering at any given time, but another government volcanologist Gede Swantika said there are normally only five to 10 on the third-highest alert level, indicating an increase in seismic activity and visible changes in the crater, and none at the second-highest, signifying an eruption is possible within two weeks. He said monitors noticed more volcanos were exhibiting seismic activity starting Sept. 2. "We can say this is quite extraordinary, about 20 at the same time," Swantika said. "We have to keep an eye on those mountains. ... But I cannot say or predict which will erupt. What we can do is monitor patterns." Geologist Brent McInnes said as he hadn't seen the raw data but would find such a rash of volcanic activity significant.

"If it's true that there are over 20 volcanos demonstrating increased levels of seismic activity, then that is something we should pay attention to," said McInnes, a professor at Australia's Curtin University who has done extensive volcanic research in Indonesia. He said such an increase could indicate "maybe there is a major plate restructuring going on, and that would be significant." Two of the closely watched volcanos - Karangetang and Ibu - are at the second-highest alert level. Karangetang erupted in August, killing four people, and both mountains shoot out ash daily, local monitors said. The two mountains lie within a few hundred miles (kilometers) of each other more than 1,400 miles (2,300 kilometers) northeast of Jakarta. Anak Krakatua, a volcano known as the "Child of Krakatoa" also started shooting lava last week. Although the firebursts look spectacular, there were no immediate signs of major eruption, said Anton Tripambudi, a government seismologist. The mountain, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of Jakarta, was formed after the Krakatoa eruption of 1883, the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history that, along with a tsunami, killed at least 36,417 people.

Piton de la Fournaise is a volcano on Réunion Island, in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. Its eruptions are similar to Kilauea’s on the island of Hawaii—very frequent emissions of fluid lava. The latest eruption of Piton de la Fournaise began on October 14, 2010.

This natural-color satellite image was acquired on October 19, 2010. A blue-tinged plume rises from the south flank of the volcano, and the small orange dot at the base of the plume is likely a lava fountain. Lava generally flows towards the east, where Piton de la Fournaise’s caldera opens to the ocean (off the right-hand edge of the image). The 5,000-year-old caldera is filled with dark gray solidified lava. The darkest flows are very recent, less than 30 years old. Outside the caldera green vegetation covers the land. The image was acquired by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard Earth Observing-1 (EO-1).

On October 28, 2010 Shiveluch Volcano erupted, sending an ash plume 25,000 feet (7,600) meters high. Despite moderate cloud cover, the ash was visible from space. This natural-color satellite image shows the light brown plume rising from Shiveluch and out over the Kamchatkan coast and Kamchatskiy Zaliv (Gulf of Kamchatka). Beneath the ash and clouds snow covers most of the land. To the south of Shiveluch a smaller, darker plume is visible over Klyuchevskaya, another of the currently active Kamchatkan volcanoes.

    Situation:

In April, clouds of ash from an eruption under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier grounded flights across Europe for a week, causing billions of dollars in losses for airlines and other industries. Water now pouring from Iceland's biggest glacier, Vatnajokull, which sits on top of a number of volcanic hot spots, could be a sign of fresh geological activity, said Gudrun Johannesdottir. Eyjafjallajokull is about 60 miles southeast of Vatnajokull. "We have to check if there will be an eruption," Ms Johannesdottir said. "Sometimes it initiates an eruption when a glacial outburst flood starts, but not every the time. So we are monitoring the situation closely." The latest eruption at Grimsvotn, in 2004, caused short-term disruptions to airline traffic into Iceland.

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: Indonesia Sunda Strait Anak Krakatau Volcano

    Situation:

Mount Anak Krakatau continued on Sunday its frenzied expulsion of volcanic material, including hot rocks, sand and dust shrouded in toxic fumes — seven times more frequently than just a week earlier. “Usually Mt. Anak Krakatau experiences an average of 90 to 100 small scale eruptions a day. Now, the number of eruptions can reach 700 a day,”

Andi Suhardi, head of the Mt. Anak Krakatau observation post in Hargo Pancuran village, said on Monday. Mt. Anak Krakatau is a volcano located near Krakatau Island between Sumatra and Java. “Solid material falls on the mountain slopes. However, the sand and volcanic dust can cover greater distances depending on how strong the wind blows,” Andi said. He added that Krakatau’s volcanic activity has been increasing slowly since last Monday, reaching almost 90 eruptions per day. Activity further escalated after Mt. Merapi in Central Java erupted, he said.

A day before the latest eruption, authorities raised the alert status for Mt. Anak Krakatau and advised people to stay at least several kilometers away. “We advise fishermen and tourists not to come within a radius of 3 kilometers of Krakatau. The thick plumes of smoke sent off by Krakatau contain toxic material that is hazardous for your health,” Andi said. Although Mt. Krakatau’s rumblings increased after Mt. Merapi’s eruption, volcanologists claimed that no link existed between the active volcanoes. “No connections exist between the two because they both have their own magma pockets,”

    เจ้าเมราิปิกับ Krakatau’sไม่มีความเกี่ยวเนื่องกัน เพราะทั้งสอง มีแม็กม่าเป็นของตัวเอง

Agus Budiyanto, head of the volcano observation team at the Center of Volcanology and Geological Mitigation Agency (BPVMG) in Bandung, West Java, said. Lucas Donny Setijadji, a volcanologist from Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, said that the weak, local seismic tremors produced by Mt. Merapi’s eruptions lacked sufficient energy to trigger volcanic eruptions elsewhere, including at Mt. Krakatau. However, there was a possibility that the eruptions of Mt. Merapi, and Mt. Krakatau were triggered by tectonic movements caused by the Mentawai earthquake, he said.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake epicentered near South Pagai in the Mentawai Islands regency, rattled the region last Monday and generated a 2-meter tsunami that killed 449 people. “Based on observation alone, Mt. Merapi erupted not long after the earthquake occurred,” Lucas said. He added that sliding tectonic plates during the earthquake could have created new fissures that acted as conduits for magma.

The plates could have shifted and pushed against the “magma kitchen” below Mt. Merapi, thus creating pressure that pushed the magma upwards, he added. “The stability of the magma below became disturbed,” he told The Jakarta Post. Sumatra and Java Islands are on the fringes of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian continental plates and are part of the so-called Ring of Fire, home to a large number of volcanoes.

Situation: Indonesia's most dangerous volcano is once again sending searing gas clouds and burning rocks down its scorched flanks. No casualties were reported in Mount Merapi's latest blasts on Wednesday, which came as Indonesia struggled to respond to an earthquake-generated tsunami that devastated a remote chain of islands last week. Thousands of people living along Merapi's slopes have been evacuated to government-run camps well away from the base. Safari Dwiyono, a state volcanologist, said the new eruption started at 8.11am local time. It spewed gas and rocks five kilometres down the mountain's slopes. Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 235 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanos because it sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a horseshoe-shaped string of faults that lines the Pacific. Merapi has killed 38 people in the last week and prompted the government on Tuesday to order airlines to choose routes circumventing the towering dark ash on takeoff and landing. Several international flights have been cancelled. Dwiyono believes the volcano will continue to spew out gas and rocks for weeks, possibly months, easing pressure building up inside the crater. "There's no way of knowing for sure, of course," he said. "But based on what we've seen in the last few days, we're hoping there won't be a massive explosion" More than 1300 kilometres to the west, helicopters and planes were delivering aid to the most distant Mentawai islands, where last week's tsunami destroyed hundreds of homes, schools, churches and mosques. The tsunami death toll stood at 431, the National Disaster Management Agency said.

    Situation:
Melt water continue to flow from Grimsvotn volcano, Iceland. The rate has slowed compared to previous days. An increased in electrical conductivity in the Súla river indicates that geothermal water is draining from the western side of the Skeiðarárjökull glacier. Earthquakes continue to occur under Grimsvötn volcano indicating that floodwaters flow under the glacier. There is no indication the volcano is currently erupting.

Situation: Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupted several times Wednesday, while an earthquake struck off of the coast of Papua, far to the east of the volcano. Mount Merapi, in central Java, spewed plumes intermittently for about five hours, sending out enough ash to prompt authorities to extend the danger zone an extra 5 km, to a 15 km radius from the volcano. The extension forced thousands of evacuees to seek shelter farther away, a local journalist told CNN. Mount Merapi's lava and ash have killed at least 39 people since it began erupting on October 26. An additional 74 have been injured and more than 71,000 people have been evacuated, according to Indonesia's National Disaster Management Board. Residents on the volcano have repeatedly fled, returned home to check on their houses and farm animals, and fled anew with each fresh eruption. The 3,000-meter Merapi is famously unpredictable. An eruption killed two people in 2006 and another killed more than 60 villagers in 1994. About 1,300 people died when Merapi erupted in 1930. The 6.1-magnitude earthquake off the eastern Indonesian coast Wednesday did not prompt tsunami warnings from Indonesia's Bureau of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics or the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. There are no reports of damage or injuries so far. Last week, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia's coast, triggering a tsunami and killing at least 449 people. Hundreds more were injured.

    Situation:

High intensity eruptions continue at Merapi volcano, Indonesia. Heavy ashfall is occurring on the slopes of the volcano. Thick deposits of ash combined with rainfall is creating a lahar hazard. The danger zone has been increased to a radius of 20 km from the volcano, on the edge of the city of Yogyakarta. Roaring noises can be heard from a distance of 20 km. Pyroclastic flows claimed more lives on Friday, bringing the total to 118. Soldiers pulled at least 78 bodies from homes and streets blanketed by ash up to a 30 cm deep. Bodies were found in front of houses and in streets, and it appeared that many of the villagers died from the burning gas while trying to escape. Some hospitals are being overwhelmed with injured people. Nearly 200,000 people living on the mountain have been evacuated to emergency shelters. In the latest eruptions the worst hit village was Bronggang 15 kilometers from the crater. Ashfall has been reported hundreds of kilometres from the volcano. Malaysian Airlines rerouted a flight that was supposed to land in the city of Bandung 380 kilometers west of Merapi. This eruption has released 50 million cubic meters of volcanic material, making it the biggest in at least a century at the volcano. Plumes of ash continued to rise to altitudes over 30,000 feet. The Indonesian government announced an $11 million (US) program to buy the cows on the mountain to keep farmers off its slopes, and to provide compensation for animals lost in the eruptions.

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: Philippines Province of Sorsogon Mt. Bulusan Volcano

Situation: Bulusan Volcano, Philippines ejected an ash column on 6th November that reached a height of 600 meters above the crater. The eruption lasted for 57 seconds. Four volcanic earthquakes were recorded before the eruption. Areas 6-10 km NW of the crater received ashfall. PHIVOLCS raised the Alert Level status of Bulusan Volcano from Alert level 0 to Alert Level I (abnormal). The current activity may indicate hydrothermal disturbance under the volcano which may lead to more steam and ash eruptions. The public is prohibited from entering the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone. People residing near the valleys and streams should beware of of lahars.

    Event: Volcano Eruption
    Location: Iceland Grimsvotn Volcano

    Situation:

Torrents of water are pouring from a glacier that sits atop Iceland's most active volcano, an indication that the mountain is growing hotter and may be about to erupt, scientists said Monday. The flooding triggered by hot molten rock, or magma, from the volcano has been expanding a lake underneath the glacier, building pressure strong enough to send water pouring from
