    การระเบิดครั้งนี้อาจเป็นการระเบิดที่แรงที่สุดในรอบหลายๆ ปีมาก

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Indonesia Central Java / Yogyakarta Volcano Mt. Merapi
    Number of Deads: 25 person(s)
    Number of Injured: 39 person(s)
    Number of Evacuated: 11491 person(s)

Situation: The death toll following the eruption of Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano has risen to 25, officials say, amid fears of fresh eruptions. Experts told the BBC that the ash levels had subsided a little, but that their readings suggested there would be more volcanic activity soon. Thousands fled their homes on Tuesday as ash spewed out of the volcano, turning the landscape white. But many people refused to leave, and rescuers fear the death toll may rise. One rescuer, Christian Awuy, told the BBC that he feared up to 50 could have been killed. He said although 10,000 people had been evacuated, many had stayed behind. The AFP news agency reported local officials as saying the man known as the volcano's spiritual gatekeeper, Mbah or grandfather Marijan, was among the dead. For many Javanese, Merapi is a sacred site.

The agency said he was found dead in his house about 4km (2.5 miles) from the summit, but this has not been independently confirmed. A cameraman for Reuters was quoted as saying: "Several houses and cattle have been burned by the hot cloud from the mountain. All the houses are blanketed in ash, completely white. The leaves have been burned off the trees." Endita Sri Andiyanti, a spokeswoman at the main local hospital, said 25 people were dead and more than a dozen others were being treated for injuries. Government vulcanologist Subandrio told the BBC's Karishma Vaswani in Jakarta that the volcanic activity appeared to have subsided based on the recordings of the levels of hot ash in the air. However, he said he expected more eruptions soon, although there was no way of telling when or how big they would be. Another vulcanologist, Ed Venski of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, told the BBC's World Today that pressure building up under a "lava dome" inside the volcano threatened further devastation.

"This the largest hazard at Merapi. It builds up as a sticky lava, where it builds up into a dome. "At some point either there's an explosion from below that causes it to collapse, or a simple addition of lava causes it to collapse. And this sends large, hot blocks of solidified lava down the slopes," he said. This "pyroclastic flow" is highly dangerous both in its heat and the poison of the gases. Experts hope the volcano, some 500km (310 miles) south-east of Jakarta on Indonesia's most heavily populated island, Java, will release steam slowly rather than erupt in a big blast. Authorities are continuing to move away thousands of local villagers living near the volcano, but it is proving to be difficult. Many villagers ignored warnings because they were reluctant to leave homes and farms unattended.

The Klyuchevskoy volcano on Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia’s Far East, is spewing columns of ash from its crater to a height of up to nine kilometers, with ash plumes stretching in different directions from the restive mountain for hundreds of kilometers. In the past 24 hours seismologists have registered no less than 100 underground vibrations at the site.
Usually, the eruption of the volcano, the height of which is 4,750 meters, occurs once in 5-6 years.
A new period of activity began in August 2009. The volcano is under continuous monitoring.

    ภูเขาไฟในอินโดระเบิดยอดตายเพิ่มเป็น 28 บาดเจ็บ 39

    Event: Volcano Eruption
Location: Indonesia Central Java / Yogyakarta Volcano Mt. Merapi
    Number of Deads: 28 person(s)
    Number of Injured: 39 person(s)
    Number of Evacuated: 11491 person(s)

Situation: One of Indonesia's most active volcanoes spewed out clouds of ash and jets of searing gas today in an eruption that has killed at least 28 people and injured 14. Mount Merapi, on the outskirts of the city of Yogyakarta on Java island, first erupted yesterday, a day after a tsunami pounded remote islands in western Indonesia, killing at least 113 people. Authorities have been trying to evacuate more than 11,000 villagers living on the slopes of the volcano, where many houses have been destroyed, the ruins lying covered in white ash. Kresno Heru Nugroho, head spokesman for Yogyakarta's Sardjito hospital, said 28 people had been killed by bursts of hot air released by the volcano late on Tuesday. His colleague, Endita Sri Andrianti, said some people were burned beyond recognition. "We are still collecting details to identify them. Most of them were burned to death," she said, adding that 14 villagers had suffered burn injuries. She was unable to confirm local media reports that among the dead was the elderly spiritual guardian of the mountain, Mbah Maridjan, believed by many Javanese to possess magical powers. Many of victims had been found in or around the spiritual leader's house in the village of Kinahredjo, close to the volcano's crater, local media reported. A cameraman at Kinahredjo said he saw burns victims being brought down from the mountain in body bags. Houses in the village had been destroyed.

"Several houses and cattle have been burned by the hot cloud from the mountain," the cameraman said. "All the houses are blanketed in ash, completely white. The leaves have been burned off the trees." Clouds of smoke and ash obscured the peak of the mountain, making it impossible to see if lava had begun flowing. The country' top vulcanologist, Surono, said Merapi was now quite calm. "There are no signs of another imminent eruption but I cannot guarantee anything and we don't know if this is just a temporary rest," Surono, who like many Indonesians only has one name, said.

"I have advised local officials to continue the evacuations. It's still on the highest alert level." However, Metro TV showed footage of some villagers returning home today. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono flew back from Hanoi, where he had been due to take part in a summit of East Asian leaders, to oversee relief efforts for the Merapi eruption and Sumatra tsunami, but said he expected to return to Vietnam for the main summit which runs from Thursday to Saturday. "I will go back to Indonesia to ensure all the emergency response has been conducted well and after that... I will return to attend the East Asia Summit," he told reporters in Hanoi. Indonesian news portal Okezone quoted the manager of Yogyakarta's Adisucipto International Airport as saying that flights had not been disrupted by the ash cloud.

On October 28, 2010 Shiveluch Volcano erupted, sending an ash plume 25,000 feet (7,600) meters high. Despite moderate cloud cover, the ash was visible from space. This natural-color satellite image shows the light brown plume rising from Shiveluch and out over the Kamchatkan coast and Kamchatskiy Zaliv (Gulf of Kamchatka). Beneath the ash and clouds snow covers most of the land. To the south of Shiveluch a smaller, darker plume is visible over Klyuchevskaya, another of the currently active Kamchatkan volcanoes.

Situation: Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupted again Friday, sending a plume about 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) above the mountaintop, an extreme weather chaser said. Ash drifted to the south after the eruption about 10 a.m. local time, weather chaser James Reynolds said. Residents started streaming down the mountain, heading for safer ground. Some were being evacuated after having already returned home following eruptions earlier in the week, observers from the Volcanology Agency near Merapi said. No injuries or deaths were immediately reported Friday. The volcano killed at least 32 people when it exploded earlier in the week, medical officials said. Rescue and recovery efforts continue to unfold, with the Indonesian government scrambling to help tens of thousands of residents displaced by the eruption. Mount Merapi, which looms on the horizon north of the major city of Yogyakarta, is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes and lies in one of the world's most densely populated areas. The volcano has a summit elevation of nearly 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). Hundreds of displaced residents have crammed a small government building in Yogyakarta. Many had fled with only the clothes on their backs. Some residents refused to flee, holding out to watch over their crops and livestock. Some residents awaited word from the traditional gatekeeper of Mount Merapi. But Maradjin, the gatekeeper, fell victim to the volcano as well. He was buried Thursday. He died in his 80s, after being appointed about two decades ago by the last Sultan of Java. Hundreds paid their respects as Maradjin was buried in the volcano's shadow, along with two other people who died with him. The revered elder had refused to leave the mountain, even as it rumbled. Maradjin, whose father was gatekeeper before him, spent decades guarding the volcano and trying to appease its spirits with offerings. "Merapi is a house of spirits, which also means a living mountain," Maradjin told CNN in a 2006 interview. "When Merapi emits smoke, we have to be respectful."

    Situation Update No. 1
    On 2010-10-29 at 03:44:08 [UTC]

    Event: Volcano Activity

Location: Russia [Asia] Kamchatka Peninsula Klyuchevskaya Sopka Volcano and the Shiveluch volcano
Situation: Two volcanoes erupted Thursday on Russia's far-eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, tossing massive ash clouds miles (kilometers) into the air, forcing flights to divert and blanketing one town with thick, heavy ash. The Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Eurasia's highest active volcano, exploded along with the Shiveluch volcano, 45 miles (70 kilometers) to the northeast, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's branch in Kamchatka said, adding that flights in the area had to change course. Ash clouds from the remote volcanoes billowed up to 33,000 feet (10 kilometers) and were spreading east across the Pacific Ocean, vulcanologist Sergei Senyukov told Rossiya 24 television. Streams of lava flowed down the slopes of Shiveluch. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday issued a notice to pilots that they should remain alert for possible ash clouds, saying emissions have "intermittently complicated air travel" in the area of the Kamchatkan Peninsula. "Any air carriers, including foreign air carriers, that observe or experience any difficulties resulting from an encounter with volcanic ash, please notify air traffic control immediately," the notice said. Several pilots have reported seeing ash clouds in the Alaskan region, FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said. However, the ash has been below 25,000 feet, while planes are assigned altitudes above that level so there was no difficulty, she said. Thus far FAA hasn't issued any flight restrictions due to ash, she said.

The FAA spokeswoman Tammy Jones said the agency does not anticipate any impact from the eruptions on air traffic to the United States. The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center in Tokyo issued an advisory for planes to be alert for the ash cloud, although Tokyo's Narita airport said it had no flights diverted yet. South Korean flights in the region reported no disruptions, according to South Korea's Incheon International Airport Corporation, and South Korea's two main airlines, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines. Volcanic ash blanketed the nearby town of Ust-Kamchatsk, reducing visibility to only a few feet (meters) and turning buildings ghostly white. Emergency officials said the town's 5,000 residents weren't in any immediate danger but urged them to stay indoors and tightly close doors and windows to avoid inhaling ash particles that could lead to respiratory illnesses and allergic reactions. Schools and businesses in Ust-Kamchatsk quickly closed and all streets were shut down to traffic. Scientists warned that ashes will likely continue falling on the area for at least 10 days.

Ust-Kamchatsk is 45 miles (70 kilometers) east of Shiveluch and 75 miles (120 kilometers) northeast of Klyuchevskaya Sopka, and winds blew ash from both on the town. Shiveluch quieted down later Thursday, but Klyuchevskaya Sopka, which stands 15,584 feet (4,750 meters) high, kept erupting, Russian officials said. Jen Burke, a meteorologist with the Alaska Aviation Weather Unit, said ash from the Shiveluch eruption — the larger of the two — was moving across the Bering Sea at a height of 25,000 feet (7,620 meters). That could put it in the path of planes flying between Asia and North America over Alaska. "Right now it's not a difficult area to avoid because it's north of the Aleutian Islands," Burke said. "Planes could fly south of the Aleutian Islands and be perfectly safe." She said ash might affect the extreme west coast of Alaska but winds were predicted to push the cloud north. Kamchatka, which juts into the Pacific, is studded with active volcanoes. The Emergency Situations Ministry warned Thursday that another volcano across the peninsula to the south, Gorely, has begun spewing gases and could erupt any moment. Gorely is located about 45 miles (70 kilometers) south of Kamchatka's regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Kamchatka volcanoes are part of the "Ring of Fire" string of volcanoes encircling the Pacific. The Russian eruptions are not related to the recent activity of Indonesian volcanoes, said Lee Siebert, director of the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program. On Tuesday, eruption of the Mount Merapi volcano in Indonesia killed 33 people.
