The youngest land on Earth lies along the southern coast of the island of Hawaii, where lava from Kilauea Volcano enters the ocean. When lava meets the sea, it vaporizes seawater and creates a dense plume of steam. Over time, the lava builds a delta, extending the shoreline of Hawaii. From November 1986—when lava from the current eruption first reached the ocean—through December 2009, Kilauea created 192.3 hectares (475 acres) of new land.
This natural-color satellite image shows lava entering the ocean at the Puhi-o-Kalaikini Delta. It was acquired by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) on September 28, 2010. Black areas are fresh lava flows, the earliest of which were laid down from 1986 to 1992. Activity along this section of coast resumed in 2007, with breakouts earlier this year encroaching on the town of Kalapana, which was partially covered in 1990 and 1991. Healthy vegetation is green, while vegetation scorched by recent lava flows is brown. Trade winds blow the white plume to the west. The image is accompanied by an aerial photograph taken on September 30 by the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaii Volcano Observatory.

Karymsky is one of the many active volcanoes on Russia’s Kamchatka Penninsula. On the afternoon of October 8, 2010, it sent a plume of gas and ash 2,700 meters (9,000 feet) high and about 90 kilometers (50 miles) downwind over the Kronotskiy Kroniv (Kronotsky Gulf). This natural-color satellite image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Aqua. The region’s white, snow-covered peaks stand out against the land surface, colored in the hues of autumn. The light gray volcanic plume extends almost directly east from the volcano’s summit.

The seismic crisis (characterized by numerous earthquakes at the base of the volcano) began at 1:30 p.m.. It peaked at about 3 pm. A larger than average earthquake occurred at 2:50 pm, which resulted in collapse of the inner walls of Dolomieu crater. The seismic crisis, which reflects the rise of magma in the volcano edifice, has slowed after 3 pm. According to information provided by the Volcano Observatory, the eruption took place near the site known as "Château-Fort"

Indian Ocean volcano erupts for 2nd time this year

Lava flows from the Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Reunion Island on Friday.

One of the world's most active volcanoes is at it again.
The Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Reunion Island in the western Indian Ocean erupted Thursday evening after several days of increased seismic activity, the island's government said.
The eruption is contained to one of the volcano's calderas, and the lava flow is stable, but public access to the volcano - a main tourist attraction - will be restricted, the local government said in a statement.
The volcano is about 30 miles southeast of the island's capital, Saint Denis. No one was reported to be in danger; a local newspaper, the Journal de l'Ile de la Reunion, reported that the last eruption happened over 10 days in January.
More than 150 eruptions of the volcano have recorded since the 17th century, according to the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program.
Reunion, a department of France, is home to about 784,000 people and lies more than 400 miles east of Madagascar.

Prepared jointly by the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center and the U.S. Air Force. Updated 2010 Oct 16 2200 UTC Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity SDF Number 289 Issued at 2200Z on 16 Oct 2010 IA.

Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 15/2100Z to 16/2100Z: Solar activity was at moderate levels. Region 1112 (S18W28) produced an impulsive M2.9/1N flare at 16/1912Z. Associated with this event were weak, discrete radio emissions ranging from 245MHz - 15,400MHz including a 140sfu Tenflare observed at 16/1916Z. In addition, a Type II radio sweep, with an estimated shock velocity of 929km/s was observed with this event. During the period, Region 1112 grew both in spot count and area and developed beta-gamma magnetic characteristics.

The remainder of the disk and limb remained unchanged. IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be at very low to low levels, with a chance for additional M-class events from Region 1112 all three days of the period (17 - 19 October). IIA.

Geophysical Activity Summary 15/2100Z to 16/2100Z: The geomagnetic field was quiet at all latitudes. IIB.

Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is expected to be at predominately quiet levels for days one and two (17 - 18 October). By day three (19 October), unsettled to active levels, with isolated minor storm periods at high latitudes, are expected.

The increase in activity is due to a geoeffective coronal hole high speed stream coupled with possible glancing blow effects from the 14 October CME.

It consists of two submarine cinder cones that formed ephemeral islands during an eruption in 1923 and two submarine lava cones of uncertain age. The 1923 eruption produced two small islands, one about 30 m (98 ft) high and about 450 m (1,476 ft) long, and the other only 30 m (98 ft) wide and 30 cm (12 in) high. A third submarine cone reached to within 20 m (66 ft) of the surface. Additional submarine cones occur between Ile des Cendres and the Vietnam mainland (Bondarenko and Nadezhnyi, 1989).

Merapi is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Indonesia and has produced more lava flows than any other volcano in the world. It has been active for 10,000 years and has registered eruptions on average every four years. "The status of Merapi was raised on September 21 from the second degree 'warning' to the third degree 'expectation,' and all activities in the threatened area around the volcano will be banned for safety reasons," said Surono, the head of the Center for Volcanology. The official said the volcano's activity had been rapidly increasing, accompanied by tremors and frequent lava spills. Most eruptions of Merapi involve a collapse of the lava dome creating lava flows which travel around 4 miles from the summit. "According to our calculations, the new eruption could produce lava flows that travel up to 15 miles," Surono said. Merapi is located about 20 miles north of the city of Yogyakarta, and thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano, with villages as high as 1,700 meters above sea level. In 1997 and in 2006, thousands of Merapi villagers were evacuated when the volcano began spewing ash and lava. The worst eruption in 1930 killed around 1,300 people.

    Situation Update No. 1
    On 2010-10-22 at 16:46:33 [UTC]

    Event: Volcano Activity
Location: Indonesia Central Java / Yogyakarta Volcano Mt. Merapi Situation: All routes to Mount Merapi were closed to the public on Friday as the alert status of one of the most active volcanoes in the world was raised to “standby,” just one level below a full-blown eruption. All residents on the slopes of the mountain have been advised to say outside an eight-kilometer radius from the peak following the issuance of the latest alert status on Thursday evening. “We also advise people to stay away from the rivers that flow from the mountain because lava may spew out at any time and flow through them,” said Sri Sumarti, Mount Merapi section head at the Volcano Investigation and Technology Development Institution (BPPTK) in Yogyakarta. Sand miners have been asked to stop all activities, and tourists and mountain climbers have been advised to stay away.

“They are not allowed to approach the disaster-prone areas. There are no exceptions to anyone on appeal. Only authorized personnel may enter to monitor the observation post at a certain distance,” she said. Junita Parjanti, the spokeswoman of the National Park of Mount Merapi, said no climbing permits had been issued since Sept. 22, when the status was raised from the “active/normal” to “beware.” Sumarti added that electronic distance measurement readings showed the fattening of the body of Mount Merapi continued to increase. On Thursday it was recorded at 8.5 centimeters per day, while on Friday increased dramatically to 16.4 centimeters per day. “On Friday, deep volcanic earthquakes occurred seven times, shallow volcanic earthquake 34 times, multiphase volcanic earthquakes 321 times and lava splashed 93 times,” she said. The local governments in Yogyakarta, Boyolali, Klaten and Magelang, around Mount Merapi, are now accelerating the preparation of evacuation routes. But Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X said the government had not yet ordered an evacuation. “We’re going to see the latest developments of the volcanic activities before issuing the evacuation order,” he said. “If lava melts just around the top of the mountain and it does not reach the villages, residents would refuse to evacuate. They’re worried their property would be stolen if the houses are abandoned.”

“The mountain never really fully erupts, it just melts. I hope Mount Merapi will not erupt this time. But we will still prepare the evacuation plan for residents.” Separately, Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih told reporters in a press conference on Friday that the ministry had asked the local health agencies to be ready for a possible eruption of Mt. Merapi. “We have asked local health agencies to have enough supplies of drugs because when people are evacuated and live in shelters they are at risk of acquiring ISPA [an upper respiratory syndrome], fever, and diarrhea,” Endang said. “We do not want them experiencing shortage of drugs as well as health officials to help the evacuees,” she said. Merapi last erupted in 2006, claiming two lives. Its biggest recorded eruption was in 1672, killing about 3,000 people.

Situation: Authorities have evacuated more than 11,000 villagers living on the slopes of the Mount Merapi volcano near Yogyakarta on Java after the alert status for an eruption was raised to the highest level. 11,491 people living within 10 km from the top of the volcano are expected to have been evacuated by the military and police. Seven safety shelters have been prepared for the villagers. Indonesia's vulcanology and geological disaster mitigation centre raised the volcano's alert status to the highest alert level today. Authorities said 'we recommended evacuation for people living on the slopes, especially the southern, southeastern and eastern slopes, the mountain had already released twice as much energy in recent days than in recent eruptions.' In a 1994 eruption, 70 people were killed in an eruption when the volcano's lava dome collapsed. The volcano killed 1,300 people in 1930. Earlier, a major 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Indonesia but there were no reports of damage or casualties and an earlier tsunami warning was lifted.

Situation: At least 15 people were killed and 13 injured Tuesday after a volcano on Indonesia's Java island erupted, spewing clouds of hot ash, local television reported. Metro TV said thousands of people were moved by trucks and cars after Mount Merapi started spewing hot ash and volcanic rocks just before dusk, a day after authorities upgraded an alert status to the highest level. Television footage showed residents, most wearing masks, being taken away in trucks with windscreens covered by dust. "This is an initial phase of an eruption," said Subandrio, head of the Volcanic Technology Development and Research Centre in Yogyakarta, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. Metro TV reported that 15 badly burned bodies were found near the house of Mbah Marijan, the man known as the keeper of the mountain, who had refused to leave his home. It said one of them was a journalist who climbed the mountain to interview Marijan. An Indonesian Red Cross official said 13 people were injured and were being treated in a hospital. Officials could not be reached immediately to confirm the report of deaths. Vulcanologist Surono said three explosions were heard at around 6 pm (1100 GMT)and Merapi spewed clouds of black smoke 1,500-metres into the sky. On Monday authorities began moving children and elderly people to some of the 60 emergency shelters after scientists upgraded the alert status as lava flowing down the cone's slopes reached 4.5 kilometres. Tents, blankets and plastic sheeting were distributed to dozens of evacuation points around Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces, said Arief Setyo Hadi, an official with the Indonesian Red Cross. Officials estimated up to 40,000 people were living in the endangered areas.

Situation: A volcano eruption on Tuesday afternoon in Central Java of Indonesia has killed 17 people and injured at least 39 after the victims were hit by hot ash, and over 15,000 people have fled their homes, local officials said on Wednesday. Sixteen people were found dead in one area, and a baby died on the way to hospital, Yogyakarta Disaster and Mitigation Management Agency official Windu Wiryawan said. "Sixteen bodies have been found in one compound which was covered by ash, and one baby was also killed," he told Xinhua over the phone from Yogyakarta. Most of the victims' bodies have been severely burned and turned black, according to a local TV report. Wiryawan said that there were at least 39 people receiving treatment in hospitals for respiratory problems and injuries. "Many trees fell after being hit by the hot ash, and this hampers the evacuation," he said. Local authorities have ordered residents within 10 kilometers of the volcano to evacuate the area, said Wiryawan. "There have been more than 15,000 people taking shelters so far. They live in barracks, schools and makeshift tents," he said.

The 2,968-meter-high Mount Merapi erupted three times on Tuesday, with the first one recorded at 5:02 p.m. Jakarta time ( 1002 GMT). An observer at the monitoring post for Mount Merapi in Sleman district of Yogyakarta, Heru Saparwoko, told Xinhua on the phone that the situation is under close watch. Local TV footage showed thousands of panicked residents fled the danger zone by cars or other vehicles to take shelter in areas far from the mountain. There are still over 40,000 people near the mountain, local officials said. The previous eruption of Mount Merapi in 2006 killed two people. A 1994 eruption claimed 60 lives. In 1930, a major eruption killed more than 1,000 people.

Situation: Up to 25 people have been killed after Indonesia's most volatile volcano began spewing hot ash. Scientists have warned that pressure building beneath Mount Merapi's lava dome could trigger one of the most powerful blasts in years. "There was a thunderous rumble that went on for ages, maybe 15 minutes," said a local farmer. "Then huge plumes of hot ash started shooting up into the air." TV pictures showed police and volunteers carrying ash-covered corpses to waiting vehicles. A two-month-old baby was among the dead. Government officials told the 11,400 villagers living on the 2,968-metre high mountain to evacuate the area. Most fled immediately, but some stayed to look after their farms, crops, and livestock. Merapi - which translates as Mountain of Fire - is on the main island of Java, about 300 miles south-east of the capital Jakarta.
