MORE SOLAR ACTIVITY: Sunspot AR1402, the source of this week's powerful M9-class solar flare, is acting up again. On Jan. 26th between 0100 UT and 0600 UT, a sequence of C-class magnetic eruptions around the active region hurled a bright coronal mass ejection over the sun's north pole, shown here in a coronagraph image from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory:​

The cloud is not heading toward Earth, at least not directly. This and future eruptions from AR1402 are unlikely to be geoeffective as the sunspot is turning away from our planet. By week's end it will be on the far side of the sun, blasting its CMEs toward planets on the opposite side of the solar system.

Sunspot 1402 is rotating onto the far side of the sun, so the blast site was not facing Earth. Nevertheless, energetic protons accelerated by the blast are now surrounding our planet, and an intensifying S1-class radiation storm is in progress.

The explosion also produced a spectacular coronal mass ejection (CME): SOHO movie. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab say the cloud raced away from the sun at 2500 km/s or 5.6 million mph. MAJOR FLARE OCCURRED-PROTON EVENT IN PROGRESS
NOAA AR 1402

produced a X1.7 flare on Jan. 27 peaking at 1837 UT. A proton event is
in progress for protons from 10 to 50 Mev. 100 MeV protons flux is close
to the threshold and might cross it within few hours. A halo has been
observed with LASCO and COR2 coronagraphs (~1900 km/s on COR2 A). Due to
the position of the AR, close to the limb, it is, at the moment,
expected that the bulk of the CME will miss the Earth.

A major X-class solar flare is now in progress.The X1.7 flare fired off from sunspot region 1402 Friday Jan. 27 which peaked at 1837 UT. A pulse of highly charged particles are heading towards Earth, but should present only a glancing blow.

Region 1402 is just now making its way around the western limb of the Sun, hence the X-class flare and following CME (coronal mass ejection) should present a partial stream Earth directed. ​

However, a coronal hole high-speed stream continues to shower Earth's magnetic field.

Equation:
Sunspots => Solar Flares (charged particles) => Magnetic Field Shift => Shifting Ocean and Jet Stream Currents => Extreme Weather and Human Disruption (mitch battros 1998).

This is the first X-class flare of 2012, and I expect several more in the next 18 months which could escalate into the X-7+ range. Watch for extreme weather events over the next 72 hours which includes earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, sudden temperature shifts.​

RADIATION STORM: Accelerated by yesterday's X-flare, energetic protons from the sun are swarming around Earth on Jan. 28th. The radiation storm ranks S2 on NOAA scales, which means this is not a severe storm. Nevertheless, it can still affect spacecraft and satellites at the nuisance level.
