พระมหาธรรมราชาที่ 3 หรือ พญาไสสือไทย

พระมหาธรรมราชาที่ 2 สวรรคตราว พ.ศ. 1942 และพญาไสสือไทยขึ้นครองราชสมบัติต่อมา ทรงพระนามว่า “พระมหาธรรมราชาที่ 3” อาจกล่าวได้ว่าภายหลังที่ทางอาณาจักรอยุธยาตัดกำลังหัวเมืองต่าง ๆ ของของสุโขทัยลงแล้ว เสถียรภาพทางการเมืองของอาณาจักรสุโขทัยก็ทรงลงและยากที่จะแก้ไขให้มั่นคง ขึ้นได้ เนื่องจากอาณาจักรอยุธยาสามารถขยายตัวออกไปได้อย่างกว้างขวางแต่ถึงกระนั้น พระมหาธรรมราชาที่ 3 ก็ได้ทรงกู้เสถียรภาพทางการเมืองของสุโขทัย โดยได้ทรงยกองทัพออกไปปราบปรามหัวเมืองต่าง ๆ ให้อยู่ในอำนาจแม้จะไม่ได้มากเท่ากับครั้งพญาลิไทก็ตาม แต่พระองค์ก็ได้ทำสงครามหลายครั้ง รวมทั้งเคยยกทัพไปตีเมืองเชียงใหม่ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 1945 ด้วย ซึ่งแม้จะไม่ได้ผลทางชัยชนะเลยก็ตาม แต่เป็นการแสดงถึงความพยายามในการสร้างอาณาจักรให้มีเสถียรภาพมากยิ่งขึ้น กว่าการเป็นรัฐกันชนขนาดเล็กที่อาจถูกผนวกไปอยุ่กับดินแดนของอาณาจักรใดอาณา จักหนึ่งได้

พญาไสสือไท ทรงมีพระราชโอรสสองพระองค์ คือ พญาบาล และพญาราม หลังจากที่พญาไสสือไทเสด็จสวรรคต ในปี พ.ศ. 1962 ก็เกิดจลาจลแย่งชิงราชสมบัติสมเด็จพระนครินทรราชาธิราช (พระอินทราชาธิราช) กษัตริย์อยุธยาต้องยกทัพมาปราบจลาจลโดยยกทัพไปถึงพระบาง (นครสวรรค์) พญาบาล และพญาราม ต้องออกมากราบบังคมต่อสมเด็จพระนครินทราชาธิราชจึงโปรดให้สถาปนาพญาบาลครองเมืองพิษณุโลก ทรงพระนามว่าพระศรีสุริยวงศ์บรมปาลมหาธรรมราชาธิราช และพญารามโปรดให้ครองเมืองสุโขทัย
