Researchers recently detected "an increase in internal vibration" at the Pacaya volcano, about 18 miles (30 kilometers) south of Guatemala City. The increase could cause further eruptions, according to a statement from CONRED, an emergency agency of the Guatemalan government. Seismologists have not ruled out a complete eruption that could, depending on the wind direction, bring ash and soot to the capital. An eruption of the volcano in May killed three people and shut down the international airport in Guatemala City.

Authorities declared a yellow alert for the Machin volcano located in Colombia's central Tolima department, following an increase in registered seismic activity in the area.
Colombia's Institute of Geology and Mining (Ingeominas) registered 68 tremors over the weekend, one measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale and was felt by locals in the zone.
An erruption of the Machin volcano could potentially affect close to a million people in the departments of Tolima, Quindio, Valle del Cauca and Cundinamarca.
According to Ingeominas, Machin is one of the Colombia's volcanoes that has the most propensity to affect widespread damage on the Andean nation. The volcano has a great potential to explode, due to its chemical composition, the magnitude of its erruptions and extensive deposits to feed those erruptions.
The Machin volcano's geographical location means it has the potential to adversely affect an area important to Colombia's economy.

 

Residents nervous as lava advances

Residents remained on edge as lava progressed toward the remaining homes in Kalapana Gardens subdivision at a rate of about 13.75 feet an hour as of yesterday afternoon. A finger of lava consumed a two-story home early Sunday morning.
"It's nerve-racking when it gets toward their residences," said Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Quince Mento. Being "under that kind of threat on a constant basis, they just keep an eye open all the time."
"The lava does not seem to have advanced toward any structures so far," he said. "Puu Oo (Kilauea Volcano's east rift vent) is inflating, which likely means lava is moving. We're just looking to see where."
From a cursory glance, Mento "didn't see anything moving aggressively," he said. "It seems to have stopped, almost."
Geologists are forecasting a continued eastward flow, filling in low areas, and the path is expected to widen.
"As of today, lava is still creeping toward the east, but activity today is less vigorous than in the previous few days," Janet Babb, spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, said yesterday.
A narrow finger of lava, 30 to 65 feet wide, was expected to hit the ocean yesterday, the second ocean entry in three days, she said. (It was 65 feet from the ocean at noon yesterday.)
Rather than being a river of lava, the flow that originated Sunday, which has been descending over a sea cliff, is more aptly described as "a lot of lava dripping into the ocean across a flow front of about 330 feet wide," Babb said.
Much of the kipuka that existed west of Kalapana Gardens has been buried by lava, but bits of vegetation remain here and there, Babb said.
The volcanic activity draws about 2,000 visitors every evening, many of whom trespass across private property to get a closer view of the oozing molten rock, disturbing residents.

Head of Social Department at North Sulawesi provincial office Recky Tumanduk said that those missing persons were presumably death, adding that the rescue team had found four dead bodies following the eruption. "Those four dead victims were already evacuated by teams engaged by local administrator. The evacuation had been reported to the governor," Recky was quoted by the state's official news service, Antara, as saying in his office in Manado, the province's capital city. He added the searching efforts over those missing victims were still underway. Recky said that the eruption in the most active volcano in the area incited panic among the people living in the isles, and made them refuge to places considered safe. Citing the report, he said that the eruption ransacked five houses, making four people missing, some of them were buried alive under the debris. No official data was publicized by regional mitigation agency regarding the eruption nor the scale of impact from the eruption. The latest harmful activity of Karangetang volcano was recorded in July 2009 when it spewed hot lava, and made the local administration evacuate people living around the volcano.

According to the Buenos Aires Volcanic Ash Advisory Center, Chaitén emitted an ash plume as recently as July 30, 2010. Chaitén has been erupting since May 2, 2008. Although activity has tailed off, the volcano is still sporadically releasing ash and frequently emitting steam and other volcanic gasses.


The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) acquired this natural-color satellite image on August 10, 2010. Bright white snow covers the high-elevation sections of the caldera rim, and some nearby ridges. The bare rock of the lava dome and dead vegetation (possibly coated with ash) are gray or brown. Healthy forest upwind (west) of the volcano remains green. A whispy haze, likely from volcanic emissions, covers the top of the dome.

The plume’s white color suggests that, of the visible components in the plume, steam predominated.
Located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nyiragongo is a steep-sloped stratovolcano that overlaps two older stratovolcanoes, Baruta and Shaheru. Nyiragongo reaches a height of 3,470 meters (11,384 feet). Lava flows from Nyiragongo caused numerous fatalities in 1977 and 2002.

กรมทรัพยากรตั้งชื่อโคลนภูเขาไฟใต้ทะเลอันดามันว่า "เนินพุโคลน"

นายอานนท์ สนิทวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา หัวหน้าโครงการศึกษาเสถียรภาพของชั้นตะกอนการเกิดแผ่นดินถล่มใต้ทะเล บริเวณขอบไหล่ทวีปในทะเลอันดามัน กล่าวว่า ขณะนี้ มีมติสรุปเรียกสิ่งที่คณะนักสำรวจไทยไปค้นพบบริเวณทะเลอันดามัน ว่า เนินพุโคลน เพื่อให้เป็นที่เข้าใจตรงกัน ส่วนที่ว่า จะเป็นเนินพุโคลนจริงหรือไม่นั้น จะต้องมีการศึกษาเพิ่มเติม ถึงแม้จะเป็นเนินพุโคลนจริง ซึ่งไม่ใช่ภูเขาไฟกระบวนการที่จะเกิดการสั่นสะเทือนหรือการระเบิดอย่าง รุนแรงคงเป็นไปไม่ได้ เนื่องจากมีความแตกต่างจากภูเขาไฟโดยสิ้นเชิง แต่แค่มีรูปร่างคล้ายกับภูเขาไฟเท่านั้น ทั้งนี้ ก็มีความเป็นไปได้ ว่า จะเป็นในลักษณะอื่น อาทิ เป็นเพียงหินโผล่ ซากของสิ่งมีชีวิตที่อยู่ใต้น้ำ เนื่องจากขณะนี้ทุกสิ่งอยู่ในการคาดการณ์เท่านั้น ฉะนั้นจะมีความชัดเจนกับสิ่งที่สำรวจพบได้จะต้องมีการสำรวจเพิ่มเติมอีก 1 – 2 ครั้งในพื้นที่ดังกล่าว ด้วยอุปกรณ์ที่เจาะลึกลงไปในชั้นตะกอนดิน

ด้าน นายวรวุฒิ ตันติวานิช ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านทรัพยากร กรมทรัพยากรธรณี กล่าวว่า สำหรับเนินภูเขาโคลนที่สำรวจพบนั้น จะต้องรีบศึกษาและสำรวจให้ได้ข้อสรุปที่แน่ชัดภายในสิ้นเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2550 ก่อนถึงหน้าฤดูมรสุม โดยจะใช้เวลาในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลประมาณ 2 - 3 เดือน หากได้ข้อมูลครบถ้วนและชัดเจน จะแจ้งให้สาธารณะชนได้รับทราบ ส่วนการขอใช้เรือดำน้ำไร้คนขับ หรืออาร์โอวีจากประเทศเยอรมันลงสำรวจเก็บตะกอนดินนั้น จะสามารถนำมาใช้สำรวจได้ก่อนฤดูมรสุม ปี 2551.

เมื่อ วันที่ 11 ธันวาคม ดร.อานนท์ สนิทวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา ผู้อำนวยการศูนย์เครือข่ายงานวิเคราะห์วิจัยและฝึกอบรม การเปลี่ยนแปลงของโลกในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย เปิดเผยเมื่อวันที่ 11 ธันวาคมว่า ศูนย์เครือข่ายฯ ร่วมกับสำนักงานคณะกรรมการวิจัยแห่งชาติ (วช.) ทำโครงการสำรวจเสถียรภาพของชั้นตะกอน และการเกิดดินถล่มใต้ทะเลบริเวณไหล่ทวีปและทะเลอันดามัน คณะนักวิจัยของโครงการ ได้นำเรือจักรทอง ทองใหญ่ ของกรมทรัพยากรทางทะเลและชายฝั่ง (ทช.) พร้อมเครื่องมือตรวจสอบชั้นตะกอน ออกไปสำรวจทะเลอันดามัน พื้นที่เศรษฐกิจจำเพาะไทย ระหว่างกลางเดือนพฤศจิกายนถึง 6 ธันวาคม 2549 รวมระยะเวลาศึกษาเก็บข้อมูล 16 วัน

ทั้งนี้ พื้นที่ที่สำรวจอยู่ห่างจากเกาะภูเก็ตประมาณ 300 กิโลเมตร พื้นที่ที่ศึกษาครอบคลุมประมาณ 1,500 ตารางกิโลเมตร เป็นจุดที่เรียกว่า "สะดือทะเลอันดามัน" หรือบริเวณที่ลึกที่สุดของทะเลอันดามัน ในอาณาเขตประเทศไทย ส่วนที่ลึกที่สุด ลึกประมาณ 2,800 เมตร

ดร.อานนท์กล่าวว่า สิ่งที่คณะผู้สำรวจค้นพบ โดยไม่คิดว่าจะพบมาก่อน คือ ตะกอนโคลนภูเขาไฟ หรือ "มัด โวคาโน" (MUD VOCANO) พบถึง 4 ลูกด้วยกัน โดยตะกอนโคลนภูเขาไฟที่เจอนี้ มีลักษณะคล้ายเจดีย์คว่ำ ฐานกว้างประมาณ 1 กิโลเมตร สูง 100 เมตร จากการตรวจสอบของเครื่องมือหยั่งน้ำแบบหลายความถี่ หรือมัลติบีม บาทีเมตทรี (MULTI BEEM BATHY METRY) ลูกแรก เจอที่ความลึกประมาณ 650 เมตร ห่างจากเกาะภูเก็ต ที่ลองจิจูด 96 องศา ประมาณ 200 กิโลเมตร ห่างจากจุดแรกไปทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้อีก 50 กิโลเมตร เจอลูกที่ 2 มีฐานกว้างประมาณ 500 เมตร สูง 60-70 เมตร เจอลูกที่ 3 และ 4 ในบริเวณใกล้ๆ กัน และมีขนาดใกล้เคียงกับลูกที่ 2

"บริเวณของตะกอน โคลนภูเขาไฟนั้น มีอุณหภูมิใกล้ 100 องศาเซลเซียส ขณะที่น้ำโดยรอบนั้นมีอุณหภูมิไม่เกิน 5 องศาเซลเซียสเท่านั้น เราประหลาดใจอย่างมากที่เจอปรากฏการณ์นี้ ที่ผ่านมาเราไม่เคยรู้มาก่อนว่าในท้องทะเลไทยจะมีตะกอนโคลนภูเขาไฟ เพราะเราไม่เคยสำรวจทะเลลึกขนาดนี้มาก่อน" ดร.อานนท์กล่าว

ดร.อานนท์ กล่าวว่า หากจะถามว่าสิ่งที่เจอบอกอะไรเราบ้าง คงตอบตอนนี้ไม่ได้ จะต้องไปเก็บข้อมูลเพิ่ม และเอาดินโคลนดังกล่าวไปตรวจสอบ อย่างไรก็ตาม จากการศึกษาข้อมูลของตะกอนโคลนภูเขาไฟในอ่าวเม็กซิโกและแอฟริกา พบว่าเกิดจากการเคลื่อนตัว และบีบอัดของเปลือกโลก นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าตะกอนโคลนภูเขาไฟบนเกาะอันดามัน ในประเทศอินเดีย ซึ่งห่างจากพื้นที่ที่เราไปศึกษาประมาณ 200 กิโลเมตรนั้นจะแอ๊คทีฟ หรือเดือดขึ้นมามาก หลังจากวันที่ 26 ธันวาคม 2547 หรือวันที่เกิดคลื่นยักษ์สึนามิ อย่างไรก็ตาม นักธรณีวิทยา ยืนยันว่าก่อนที่จะเกิดคลื่นสึนามิ มัดโวเคโน บริเวณนั้นก็แอ๊คทีฟ หรือเดือดอยู่แล้ว แต่หลังจากนั้นเดือดมากยิ่งขึ้น

ดร.อานนท์กล่าว ว่า ไม่อยากให้ทุกฝ่ายตื่นตระหนกกับสิ่งที่ไปเจอมา เพราะยังไม่รู้ชัดว่า คืออะไร มีมานานแค่ไหน เบื้องต้นไม่คิดว่าจะเป็นภูเขาไฟที่จะปะทุในอนาคต และไม่น่าจะใช่ต้นเหตุที่ทำให้เกิดคลื่นสึนามิ เพราะยังมองไม่เห็นความสัมพันธ์ในลักษณะดังกล่าว

"อย่างไรก็ตาม มองในแง่ดี ค่อนข้างมั่นใจว่า บริเวณนั้นเป็นแหล่งที่มีศักยภาพของแอ่งน้ำมันดิบ เพราะลักษณะแบบเดียวกันนี้ที่อ่าวเม็กซิโก มีแอ่งน้ำมันขนาดใหญ่ เราได้สำรวจเนื้อที่เพียง 1,500 ตารางกิโลเมตรเท่านั้น มั่นใจว่าหากสำรวจเพิ่มเติมในบริเวณดังกล่าว จะพบตะกอนโคลนภูเขาไฟอีกหลายลูก" ดร.อานนท์กล่าว

ดร.อานนท์กล่าวว่า หลังจากวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลที่ได้มานี้เสร็จแล้ว เราจะใช้ยานไร้คนขับ หรืออาร์โอวี ลงไปเก็บข้อมูลและเอาตะกอนโคลนมาศึกษารายละเอียดให้ชัดเจน การทำงานเรื่องนี้ค่อนข้างยาก เพราะบริเวณที่เจอนั้นน้ำลึกมาก และคลื่นใต้น้ำค่อนข้างแรง การเก็บตัวอย่างต้องใช้เครื่องมือที่มีศักยภาพสูง และต้องใช้ความระวังมากเป็นพิเศษ

มติ ชน

ตะลึงนักวิจัยไทยพบโคลนภูเขาไฟ 4 ลูกใต้ทะเลอันดามัน ห่างภูเก็ต 200 กม. เชื่อทะเลอันดามันไทยมีภูเขาไฟใต้น้ำมาก่อน เผยในอนาคตพื้นที่สำรวจอาจเป็นแหล่งน้ำมัน-แหล่งชุมนุมของสัตว์ทะเลแปลกๆ เตรียมขอยานสำรวจใต้น้ำตรวจสอบข้อมูลอีกครั้ง

นับเป็นเรื่อง ที่ทำให้วงการวิทยาศาสตร์ไทยต้องตื่นตะลึงอีกครั้ง เมื่อทีมนักวิจัยไทย และผู้เชี่ยวชาญทางธรณีวิทยาทางทะเลแห่งชาติ ได้ค้นพบโคลนภูเขาไฟ 4 ลูก บริเวณใต้ทะเลลึกฝั่งอันดามันของไทย ห่างเกาะภูเก็ตเพียง 200 กิโลเมตร ซึ่งการค้นพบครั้งนี้ทำให้เชื่อได้ว่า พื้นที่ดังกล่าวเคยมีภูเขาไฟใต้น้ำมาก่อนอย่างแน่นอน

เมื่อวันที่ 11 ธันวาคม ดร.อานนท์ สนิทวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา ผู้อำนวยการศูนย์เครือข่ายงานวิเคราะห์วิจัยการเปลี่ยนแปลงและฝึกอบรมการ เปลี่ยนแปลงแห่งภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ฐานะหัวหน้าโครงการศึกษาเสถียรภาพของชั้นตะกอนการเกิดแผ่นดินถล่มใต้ทะเล บริเวณขอบทวีปในทะเลอันดามัน กล่าวว่า ช่วงกลางเดือนพฤศจิกายน ถึงวันที่ 6 ธันวาคม ที่ผ่านมา ทีมนักวิจัยไทยร่วมกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากสถาบันทางธรณีวิทยาทางทะเลแห่งชาติ เมืองคีธ สหพันธ์สาธารณรัฐเยอรมนี ได้ออกสำรวจใต้ท้องทะเลลึกของไทยเป็นครั้งแรก ที่ระดับความลึกตั้งแต่ 1,000-2,800 เมตร ซึ่งถือเป็นจุดที่เรียกว่า สะดือทะเล อยู่บริเวณแถบไหล่ทวีปมะริด ห่างจากเกาะภูเก็ตราว 300 กิโลเมตร ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ศึกษา 1,500 เมตร

ดร.อานนท์ กล่าวต่อว่า การสำรวจดังกล่าวใช้เวลาลงทะเลประมาณ 16 วัน โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อจะเก็บตะกอนไหล่ทวีปมาศึกษาหาความเสี่ยงต่อการเกิดแผ่นดินถล่มใต้น้ำ หลังเหตุการณ์คลื่นสึนามิถล่มทะเลอันดามันเมื่อวันที่ 26 ธันวาคม 2547 ที่ผ่านมา ซึ่งการสำรวจครั้งนี้ทำให้นักวิจัยต้องตื่นตะลึง เพราะทีมนักสำรวจพบข้อมูลที่สร้างความตื่นเต้นและไม่คาดคิดมาก่อนในวงการ วิทยาศาสตร์ไทย เนื่องจากพบว่ามีโคลนภูเขาไฟใต้ทะเล (Mud Volcano) กระจายอยู่ในจุดที่สำรวจรวม 4 ลูกด้วยกัน โดยลูกแรกมีฐานความกว้างถึง 1 กิโลเมตร สูง 100 เมตร มีลักษณะเหมือนรูปเจดีย์คว่ำ เจอที่ความลึก 650 เมตร ห่างจากภูเก็ต 200 กิโลเมตร

ดร.อานนท์ กล่าวว่า ภูเขาไฟใต้ทะเลลูกที่ 2 อยู่ห่างจากจุดแรกไปทางตะวันตกอีก 50 กิโลเมตร ที่ระดับความลึก 1,000 เมตร และลูกที่ 3 และ 4 ห่างจากจุดที่ 2 ราว 60 กิโลเมตร ไปทางด้านตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ มีฐานกว้างประมาณ 500 เมตร สูง 60-70 เมตรที่ระดับความลึก 700-800 เมตร ซึ่งการค้นพบครั้งนี้สร้างความแปลกใจค่อนข้างมากแก่คณะนักสำรวจ และค่อนข้างมั่นใจว่าเป็นภูเขาไฟใต้น้ำ เพราะจากการตรวจสอบด้วยเครื่องมือหยั่งน้ำแบบหลายความถี่ ซึ่งเป็นอุปกรณ์ที่จะสร้างความสั่นสะเทือนและสะท้อนคลื่นลักษณะพื้นท้องน้ำ พบว่าในจุดที่เป็นตะกอนโคลนสามารถสะท้อนคลื่นกลับมาได้ไม่ดี เนื่องจากเป็นตะกอนโคลนที่มีความนิ่ม และคลื่นจะสะท้อนไม่แรงมากนัก จึงไม่ใช่แค่กองโขดหินธรรมดาๆ

นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า อุณหภูมิของน้ำทะเลตรงภูเขาไฟจะสูงถึง 100 องศาเซลเซียส แต่บริเวณพื้นที่ข้างๆ กันวัดอุณหภูมิได้แค่ 5 องศาเซลเซียสเท่านั้น ซึ่งตรงนี้ค่อนข้างชัดเจนว่า พื้นที่ดังกล่าวน่าจะเคยเป็นภูเขาไฟมาก่อน ขณะที่ก่อนหน้านี้เคยมีรายงานว่า พบภูเขาไฟใต้ทะเลในแถบทะเลอันดามันของประเทศอื่นๆ รวมทั้งหลักฐานว่า หลังเหตุการณ์สึนามิมีรายงานชัดเจนว่าโคลนภูเขาไฟที่อยู่บนเกาะอันดามันของ อินเดียมีการแอ็คทีฟมากขึ้น

อย่างไรก็ตาม จากการศึกษาเบื้องต้นพบว่า โคลนภูเขาไฟที่เจอใต้ทะเลอันดามันของไทย น่าจะมีลักษณะใกล้เคียงกับโคลนภูเขาไฟใต้ทะเลของอ่าวเม็กซิโก ซึ่งแหล่งความร้อนที่เกิดขึ้นนั้น อาจเกิดจากตะกอนถูกบีบอัดโดยการเคลื่อนตัวของเปลือกโลก แต่ไม่ได้หมายความว่ามีรอยแยกของเปลือกโลกในบริเวณนั้น และที่สำคัญไม่อยากให้คนไทยตื่นตระหนกกับสิ่งที่นักวิทยาศาสตร์เจอมา โดยเฉพาะข้อกังวลที่ว่าอาจเป็นภูเขาไฟที่จะปะทุในอนาคต

ส่วนที่มอง กันว่า สิ่งที่ค้นพบจะเป็นสาเหตุของการเกิดคลื่นสึนามินั้น ดร.อานนท์ กล่าวว่า ยังมองไม่เห็นความสัมพันธ์ในลักษณะดังกล่าว แต่ถ้ามองในแง่ดี ค่อนข้างมั่นใจว่าบริเวณนั้นเป็นแหล่งที่มีศักยภาพของแอ่งน้ำมันเหมือนกับ อ่าวเม็กซิโกก็ได้ นอกจากนี้ อาจเป็นแหล่งชุมนุมของสัตว์ทะเลแปลกๆ อย่างแน่นอน เนื่องจากมีการยืนยันว่า พื้นที่ดังกล่าวจะมีแร่ธาตุ และสัตว์สามารถอยู่โดยการใช้วิธีการผลิตขั้นต้นทางเคมี โดยไม่ต้องพึ่งแสงอาทิตย์ก็ได้ ทั้งนี้ เชื่อว่าหากสำรวจเพิ่มเติมในบริเวณดังกล่าวน่าจะพบตะกอนโคลนภูเขาไฟอีกหลาย ลูกแน่นอน

ดร.อานนท์ กล่าวต่อว่า หลังจากวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลต่างๆ แล้วเสร็จ จะต้องสำรวจข้อมูลเชิงลึกของโคลนภูเขาไป โดยจะต้องใช้ยานไร้คนขับ หรืออาร์โอวี ลงไปเก็บข้อมูล เพื่อนำตะกอนโคลนมาศึกษารายละเอียดให้ชัดเจน รวมทั้งดูในเรื่องแหล่งความร้อน หรือศักยภาพของการเป็นแหล่งน้ำมัน และสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่นๆ ในบริเวณดังกล่าว ซึ่งคาดว่าน่าจะเริ่มสำรวจในช่วงเดือนเมษายน 2550

"ยอมรับว่าการทำ งานครั้งนี้ค่อนข้างลำบาก เพราะบริเวณที่เจอน้ำลึกมาก และคลื่นใต้น้ำค่อนข้างแรง การเก็บตัวอย่างต้องใช้เครื่องมือที่มีศักยภาพสูง และต้องใช้ความระวังมากเป็นพิเศษ แต่ความสำเร็จในครั้งนี้เป็นเพราะความร่วมมือจากนักวิจัยที่มาจากกรม ทรัพยากรทางทะเลและชายฝั่ง กรมทรัพยากรธรณี นักวิจัยจากมหาวิทยาลัยบูรพา และจุฬาฯ และจากเยอรมนี ซึ่งได้ลงนามความร่วมมือทำโครงการสำรวจทะเลสะดือ และไหล่ทวีปร่วมกันตั้งแต่ปี 2549-51" ดร.อานนท์ กล่าว

On August 19, 2010, an ash plume was sighted at 9,000 feet (2,700 meters), according to the Tokyo Volcanic Ash Advisory Center. This natural-color satellite image shows the gray plume moving west (towards image top) from the volcano’s summit. Simultaneously, a pyroclastic flow descended the eastern slopes.
Although Sakurajima’s activity since 1955 has been characterized by frequent small eruptions, the volcano still poses a danger to the densely-populated surroundings. Roughly 7,000 years ago Sakurajima erupted with a volcanic explosivity index (VEI) of 6, equivalent to the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo.
The image was acquired by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite.
