Authorities in Indonesia say hundreds of people have fled their homes after a volcano erupted. Breathing masks and fresh drinking water are being rushed to the eastern island of Flores, where Mount Egon began spewing ash and smoke late on Tuesday. The national vulcanology office says 600 people from a village near the 1,703m volcano have been evacuated, and says no casualties have been reported. Local official Robert Rai has said that up to 23,000 people are potentially at risk from the eruption, and that the real number of people who've fled is unclear. "There are more than 23,000 people in three subdistricts within the danger zone," he said. "Initial contacts with the heads of the subdistricts said that many people panicked yesterday evening because the eruption was preceded by earthquakes." The eruption occurred at around 10.15pm local time last night, and a team of experts is now on site to monitor Mount Egon's activity.

The authorities in Indonesia have raised the alert level on Mount Papandayan. The volcano lies 51 kilometres southeast of Indonesia's third-largest city, Bandung, which is home to around three million people. Although the volcano has shown no visible signs of activity, sensors indicate that shallow volcanic earthquakes are becoming more frequent, and that magma in the crater is increasing steadily. "Since April 16, 2008, at 12:00 am (0500 UT), we have upgraded the alert level of Papandayan to 'vigilance' (level two)," the state volcanology office said in a statement. That is two levels below the alert for an impending eruption. The vulcanology office has recommended that all areas within one kilometre of the crater be closed to the public, and says a team is closely monitoring the mountain's status.

It recommended people not come within 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) of the volcanoes. The alerts for Anak Krakatau and Ibu followed the April 15 announcement that Mount Egon on the island of Flores, east of Java, had been raised to ``orange'' after it spewed ash. Evacuations were ordered around the volcano. Indonesia is located on the western side of the so-called Pacific Rim of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and geologic fault lines surrounding the Pacific Basin. The country has had two of the world's biggest volcanic eruptions in the past 200 years, Mount Tambora in 1815 and Krakatau.

Elevated levels of sulfur dioxide pouring from Kilauea volcano Wednesday forced the evacuation of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for the second time this month. About 2,000 people were forced to leave the park when a lack of wind kept the noxious gas from Halemaumau Crater lingering over the Big Island volcano, park spokeswoman Mardie Lane said. "Right now we have little to no wind," Lane said. The plume from the volcano's main crater was lingering over the area rather than getting blown away by trade winds the way it had been earlier in the week. "When you step outside, definitely your eyes tear, you have that feeling that you'd like to cough or clear your throat," Lane said. A rare two-day park closure earlier this month was caused by a shift in wind direction that prevented the gas from being blown out to sea. "Our primary concern is for the health and safety of visitors and employees," said Joe Molhoek, the park's incident commander. "We're in close contact with the National Weather Service and look forward to favorable winds by week's end." The closure included evacuation of the 42-room Volcano House hotel and the Kilauea Military Camp, a vacation facility for military families. Hawaii County Civil Defense said no evacuations were ordered for communities outside the park. Residents of nearby Volcano Golf and Country Club Estates, however, were encouraged to leave if they were experiencing respiratory problems. Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has been erupting since Jan. 3, 1983.

Townspeople in the area are complaining of migraines and respiratory illnesses which are being attributed to the ash, smoke and toxic gases the volcano is emitting. The gases the volcano is emitting have affected 800 people in the areas of Querapi, Ubinas and Sacoaya - all located in the Ubinas valley, said Jose Fuentes Flores, the regional Civil Defense director. Flores warned that there was the possibility that drinking water and water used to irrigate could be contaminated the way it was in 2006. Almost exactly two years ago, on April 23, 2006 the Peruvian government declared a state of emergency in the valley when it was determined that the volcano was active. According to Fuentes, the volcanic ash being emitted by Ubinas is affecting the grass on farms, making it impossible for livestock to eat. After three volcanic explosions formed a column of ash and gas two kilometers high (6561 feet), the country's Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMMET) reported on Wednesday that Ubinas' activity continues to increase.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is warning of increased signs of volcanic activity at Mt Ruapehu. DOC issued a statement this afternoon advising climbers and other visitors considering visiting the summit area of Mt Ruapehu that there may be an increased chance of eruptions from Crater Lake. "Risks to people entering the Summit Hazard Zone within about 2km of Crater Lake are assessed to be higher than normal. Gas concentrations near the lake have increased to levels that will affect some people." GNS scientists have continued to monitor the activity at Ruapehu since the moderate-sized eruption in September last year. No further eruptions had occurred, but an increase in gas output and the internal temperature of the volcano represent "an anomalous state of activity". DOC said it was unclear whether this was a sign of further eruptions in the near future but if there were they may occur without warning. The alert level remains at Level One. GNS Science will continue to re-assess the situation regularly.

The long-dormant Chaiten volcano blasted ash some 20 miles (30 kilometers) into the Andean sky on Tuesday, forcing thousands to evacuate and fouling a huge stretch of the South American continent. The thick column of ash climbed into the stratosphere and blew eastward for hundreds of miles (kilometers) over Patagonia to the Atlantic Ocean, forcing schools and a regional airport to close. Citizens of both countries were advised to wear masks to avoid breathing the dangerous fallout. The five-day-old eruption is the first in at least 9,000 years for the volcano in southern Chile, according to volcanologists at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Chilean officials ordered the total evacuation of Chaiten, a small provincial capital in an area of lakes and glacier-carved fjords just six miles (10 kilometers) from the roiling cloud. Also emptied was the soot-coated border town of Futaleufu, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) from the volcano. The gritty, gray-white blizzard covered houses, roads and even cattle. People wrapped cloths around their faces and wore surgical masks as they slogged through the mess. About a 1/2 inch (1 centimeter) of ash coated the Argentine tourist town of Esquel, a Patagonian resort favored by backpackers and skiers at the foot of the Andes whose airport and schools have been closed since Saturday.

The fallout covered a third of Argentina's Minnesota-sized province of Chubut, provincial Gov. Mario Das Neves said. While volcanologists around the world eagerly awaited data on the scope of the eruption, one local expert got an up-close look when he accompanied police and air force teams over the 3,950-foot (1,200 meter) mountain. Volcanologist Juan Cayupi told The Associated Press by telephone that Chaiten's two small craters have morphed into a large, single crater, and "a large amount of ash, particles, gas" was pouring out. Lava was rising within this crater but has not yet spilled over, said Luis Lara, another volcanologist with the government's Geology and Mining Service. The few remaining residents of Chaiten were transferred to two navy ships Tuesday, a day after President Michelle Bachelet visited the town, pledging financial help for people whose homes were damaged or livestock died after foraging on ash-covered grass.

Experts said it is too early to say whether the volcano will affect the world's climate. So far, Chaiten has emitted only a few thousand tons of sulfur dioxide, "which is very small," said Simon Carn, a University of Maryland-Baltimore Campus volcanologist who uses satellites to measure volcanic gases. In general, a volcano must spew at least 1 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere to have a global effect on climate, said Alan Robock, a Rutgers University professor who co-authored a book on the subject. After eruptions of unusual size, sulfur dioxide, converted into sulfuric acid, can form a thin white cloud in the atmosphere that reflects sunlight away from Earth. The Philippines' Mount Pinatubo produced a brief cooling of the climate after spewing 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide in 1991. But Robock said this volcano is so close to the South Pole that any cooling would likely be limited to the Southern Hemisphere.

Two of nature’s most spectacular forces produced an incredible brew in the skies of Chile as a volcanic eruption met a lightning storm. Tonnes of dust and ash from the eruption of the Chaitén volcano poured into the night sky just as an electric storm passed overhead. The resulting collision created a spectacular sight as lightning flickered around the dust cloud amid the orange glow of the volcano. The eruption was all the more spectacular because the Chaitén volcano, 800 miles (1,290km) south of Santiago, has been dormant for hundreds - if not thousands - of years. The Patagonian volcano began erupting on Friday and the 12-mile-high plume has left vast tracts of land coated with a layer of ash. Authorities in Chile were worried by the violence of the eruption yesterday when lava spewed out with increased ferocity. "The situation has changed suddenly," Rodrigo Rojas, a national emergency official, said. "Today the volcano is erupting with pyroplastic material on a different scale." Authorities ordered the evacuation of the remaining 300 people from the area. More than 4,000 people had already been evacuated from the town of Chaitén, which is six miles from the volcano. Luis Lara, a government geologist, said "The entire volcano will not collapse, but the eruptive column could, and that is sufficient material to be displaced into areas nearby. Lava flow would not reach Chaitén, but hot fragments, ash and gas could." Authorities are evacuating a second town, Futaleufú, which has been coated with ash. Many of Futaleufú’s 1,000 or so residents had crossed into Argentina, where some areas have also been showered with ash. Last week Argentine authorities closed schools and treated a number of people for breathing problems. In the worst-affected areas, ash is more than 15cm thick in places, coating houses, vehicles and trees, and contaminating water supplies.

A sudden collapse would shroud vast areas with hot gas, ash and remnants of molten rock. Authorities have evacuated thousands of people from the immediate vicinity of Chaiten volcano, 1220km south of the capital Santiago, and are removing people within a 50km radius. Chaiten began erupting nine days ago for the first time in thousands of years. "We are at a critical point of this phase given the characteristics (of the eruption) have remained the same for several days," Mr Lara said. "The volcano is now at its limit and one possibility is that the column could collapse quickly, generating flows of pyroclastic material down its ravines. "But there are also other scenarios, such as the energy of the eruption being released more gradually." In a worst-case scenario, the flows of ash and fiery material could reach the fjord Chaiten sits on, sending a series of small waves fanning out toward settlements up to 200km away across the water. Mr Lara said the volcano could rumble on for years. He suggested the town of Chaiten, 10km from the volcano and now deserted, should be moved. "In an ideal world, I would move the town somewhere else more protected," Mr Lara said. He would not risk living there. The cloud has also caked towns on the Argentine side of the border with ash. Satellite images show a white stripe smeared across the continent. However, ash that had drifted as far as Buenos Aires dissipated yesterday, and some airlines that had cancelled flights resumed service. Chile has 2000 volcanoes, 500 of which are potentially active. About 60 have erupted in the past 450 years.

สัตว์ หายใจนำฝุ่นเถ้าภูเขาไฟที่ Yellow Stone เข้าไปจะทำให้ปอดถูกทำลาย และ เสียชีวิตภายในเวลาไม่นาน โดยนักวิทยาศาสตร์ทำภาพจำลองพบว่า รัศมีการทำลายล้างของฝุ่นเถ้าภูเขาไฟยักษ์ที่ Yellow Stone นี้จะลอยไกลไปถึง 1,000 ไมล์ นั่นคือ สิ่งที่มีชีวิต
ในรัศมี 1,000 ไมล์ต้องล้มตายทั้งหมด

Stone นี้ จะพุ่งสูงปกคลุมพื้นที่โลกอยู่นาน
ทำให้แสงอาทิตย์ไม่สามารถสาดส่องลงมายัง
พื้นโลกได้หลายส่วน จึงมีผลทำให้อุณหภูมิทั่วโลกลดต่ำลงอย่างน้อย 10 องศาเซลเซียส(แต่ละท่าน กรุณาจินตนาการเองว่าท่านจะทนสภาพอุณหภูมิดังกล่าวได้เพียงไร เมื่อต้นปี

อินโดนีเซียเตือนภัยระดับสูงสุดภูเขาไฟบนเกาะสุลาเวสี


จาการ์ตา 7 มิ.ย.- สำนักงานสำรวจภูเขาไฟของอินโดนีเซีย เพิ่มระดับการเตือนภัยภูเขาไฟบนเกาะสุลาเวสี เป็นระดับสูงสุด หลังจากภูเขาไฟเริ่มพ่นลาวาร้อนและกลุ่มควันขนาดใหญ่
ลาวาจากภูเขาไฟโซปูตัน เริ่มไหลออกจากปากปล่องตั้งแต่วันศุกร์ ลงมาเป็นระยะทาง 1.5 กิโลเมตร แต่ยังไม่ถึงเชิงเขา สำนักงานได้เตือนประชาชนให้เลี่ยงการอยู่ใกล้ภูเขาไฟ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งพื้นที่ตั้งเต็นท์ทางฝั่งตะวันออกของภูเขาไฟ ส่วนเขตที่อยู่อาศัยใกล้ภูเขาไฟ ไม่ถือว่าเสี่ยงอันตรายแต่อย่างใด

Description:

Indonesia has raised the alert level for a volcano on Sulawesi island to the highest after it began spewing hot lava and clouds of smoke, a vulcanology official said on Saturday. Lava from Mount Soputan has been gliding down its slopes about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) from the crater since Friday but has not reached the foot of the mountain, said Saut Simatupang, head of Indonesia's Vulcanology Survey. "We have urged people to avoid areas near the volcano, especially camping areas in the eastern part of the mountain," he said, adding that residential areas near the volcano were not in any danger. Indonesia has the highest number of active volcanoes in any country, sitting on a belt of intense volcanic and seismic activity known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire." People often live and farm on the slopes of volcanoes because of the rich volcanic soil. In the past two years, at least three major volcanoes, including Anak Krakatau, have showed signs of increased activity, but there has been no serious eruption.
